Aalim Hakim is an Indian celebrity hairstylist who is known for styling the hair of actors and actresses in many films and advertisements. He is one of the most popular hairstylists in India. He owns Hakim’s Aalim salon chain.
Aalim Hakim was born on Sunday, 25 August 1974 (age 39 years; as of 2022) at Kammu Jaffer Hospital in the Bhendi Bazaar area in Mumbai City, Maharashtra. Parents & Siblings
His father, Hakim Kairanvi, was a very popular hairdresser. His father belonged to Kairana, Shamli, Uttar Pradesh and used to work as a hairdresser at the Salon Madame Jacques in The Taj Hotel in Mumbai and later started his own hairdressing shop at his home in Bhendi Bazaar, Mumbai. His father cut the hair of popular actors and celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Sunil Dutt, Mohammad Ali, and Bruce Lee. His father died on 28 March 1984 at the age of 39.
His mother’s name is Zebunnisa. He has two younger sisters named Tehzeeb and Tabir.
Wife & Children
He got married to Shano Jasbir Singh Hanspal on 27 December 2013. She follows Sikhism. They briefly dated each other before marriage. The couple has two sons named Star and Sky.
He follows Islam. He said in an interview in 2018 that he followed his religion through his own practices and that no one should force anyone to follow any religious practice. He revealed that during his son Sky’s birth registration, he mentioned Sky’s religion as humanity. He also said that his wife Shano followed Sikhism, and he never asked her about her religion. Starting Hakim’s Aalim
Aalim was inspired by his father’s vision and golden heart, and he started a salon with the name Hakim’s Aalim in the balcony of his house at the age of 16. The salon had a fan, basin, and salon chair. His college mates were actors Vivek Oberoi and Shreyas Talpade, the music director duo of Sajid–Wajid, and choreographer Bosco Martis, whom he used to bring home to give them a haircut.
He used to cut the hair of his friends for free and experimented with different hairstyles which became popular among other people. After a few days, he decided to charge for his services, and he set the price of haircutting at Rs 20 initially, and when he added Shampoo to the services, he raised the price to Rs 30 for haircutting with shampoo. He later took an AC (Air Conditioner) on rent and doubled his rates. He started making a profit in his work and purchased the AC.
Learning under International Barbers
A girl named Binafer, who used to work at L’Oréal, spotted his talent and sent him to Paris, France to learn more about the craft of haircutting. He also trained under a barber named Butrum in Austria. He trained under different barbers, which increased his confidence and the desire to make Hakim’s Aakim a big brand.
After he became famous, his salon was often been thronged by celebrities. He has also worked as a hairstylist for many actors in many films including styling the hair of Shahid Kapoor in Kabir Singh, Prabhas in Bahubali, Rajinikanth in Robot, and Salman Khan in Garv film. His clients include Bollywood actors and actresses Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, Arjun Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha Basu, and Katrina Kaif; sports stars including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, KL Rahul, Sachin Tendulkar, Suresh Raina, and Hardik Pandya; and South Indian celebrities like Mahesh Babu, Junior NTR, Vikram, Rana Daggubati, Tamannaah Bhatia, and KGF fame Yash.
Expansion of Hakim’s Aalim Outlets
After gaining some recognition, he started hiring people who wanted to become hairdressers and opened many outlets in different cities all over India and one outlet in Dubai as well.
He said in an interview that he never took any loan for setting up any outlet. He also revealed that he owned the Mumbai outlets and gave away the outlets in other cities as a franchise. Hakim’s Aalim offers Straightening and Retexturing Treatments, Hair colour services apart from hair cutting and styling. Most of his outlets are designed with Bohemian influences and are regarded as luxury salons.
Hakim’s Aalim (HA) Hair Academy
After setting up three salons in Mumbai, Aalim Hakim aimed to start his academy to teach the basics of hair cutting and styling and later taught many advanced courses to new and professional barbers. He said in an interview that he had taught more than 1 lakh barbers at his academy in Versova, Mumbai. Aalim Hakim’s Haircutting Equipment
His preferred scissor and razor brands are Jaguar and Joewell, and he prefers 5-inch lengths for regular haircuts. He prefers Matt products and Elnett hairspray. He uses different brushes for different uses such as a paddle brush for blow drying, a wooden round or thermal brush to create the body, a vent brush to create puffs, and a bow brush to create sleek styles. His preferred combs are cutting combs for finer cutting and barbering combs for beards, moustaches, sideburns, and the nape. He uses root iron to give off a natural look with a little straightness, a root crimper to add volume at the base, and a blow-dryer with a proper nozzle as well as a diffuser to remove extra moisture.

- During his college days, he used to participate in dramas and won many awards for his acting; however, he decided to become a barber.
- He revealed in an interview that he was mocked by a few of his college mates when he said that he wanted to become a barber; however, his friends always supported him and motivated him to focus on his vision.
- He appeared on an episode of The Kapil Sharma Show in April 2023, where he revealed that he made Prabhas play badminton to see how much his hair was bouncing so that he could style his hair accordingly for the Bahubali film. He said that he added hair extensions to Prabhas’ hair to give it the bouncy look while riding the horse.
- In 2017, he shaved Sonu Nigam‘s head after a fatwa was issued against him and claimed Rs 10 lakhs. He said that Sonu Nigam was not against any religion. He said,
Sonu Nigam has not said anything against Azaan. He is not against any prayer. Sonu is just talking about loudspeakers and not about any religion. If he (Maulvi) has 10 lakh rupees then he should give it to me, I will donate it to some charity.” Business Standard
- His first film projects as a hairstylist were to style Chandrachoor Singh for the Maachis film and Manoj Bajpayee for the Satya film.
- When he started expanding his salon at his house, his family members got angry with him as their space was reduced, and most of his salon occupied the house’s space.
- When his father passed away in 1984, he had only Rs 13 in the bank account.
- He has got his nose and eyelashes pierced.
