When asked about her relationship with Sushant in an interview, she said,

We’ve been very good friends for many years. I am fond of working towards our shared goals, like starting our new NGO, and travelling. If there is anything else between us or not, this isn’t something that I want to disclose yet.”

Reportedly, she was the last person whom Sushant had called before he committed suicide on 14 June 2020.

Career

In 2009, she participated in MTV India’s reality show, ‘TVS Scooty Teen Diva’, and was the first runner-up in the show.

Later, she auditioned for VJ at MTV Delhi and got selected. She has worked as a host in various MTV shows; ‘Pepsi MTV Wassup’ (2009), ‘MTV Gone in 60 seconds’ (2010), and ‘TicTac College Beat’ (2012). In 2012, she debuted in the Telugu film, ‘Tuneega Tuneega.’

She debuted in the Bollywood film, ‘Mere Dad Ki Maruti’ (2013), opposite Saqib Saleem. Some of her other Bollywood films are ‘Sonali Cable’ (2014), ‘Half Girlfriend’ (2017), ‘Bank Chor’ (2017), ‘Jalebi’ (2018), and ‘Chehre’ (2020).

She has appeared in various TV commercials including Yepme, Stayfree, and Maruti Suzuki.

Controversy

On 28 July 2020, after more than a month of Sushant Singh Rajput‘s death, an F.I.R. was lodged against Rhea by Rajput’s father K. K. Singh at the Rajiv Nagar police station in Patna, and a four-member team of Patna Police left for Mumbai to question Rhea Chakraborty and her family. In the FIR, Sushant’s father made serious allegations against Rhea. According to K. K. Singh, Rhea had kept Sushant away from his family, and she had kept Sushant completely in her possession. Sushant’s father also alleged that Rhea also controlled Sushnat’s bank accounts, and she had access to his credit cards. He further mentioned in the FIR that,

Sushant called his sister and told her that Rhea had threatened him to show doctor receipts to the media and would prove him mad. Thereafter, no person would give him work. On June 8 night, Sushant’s secretary Disha committed suicide. Rhea had appointed her as Sushant’s secretary. Later, Rhea blocked Sushant’s number on her cell. Sushant was afraid that Rhea could have made him responsible for his manager’s suicide as she had threatened to frame him in the secretary’s suicide case.”

Earlier, Rhea had requested the home minister Amit Shah to initiate a CBI investigation in the alleged suicide case of Sushant. ^[4]Hindustan Times After Bihar Police started a separate investigation into the actor’s death, a disputed ensued between Maharashtra Police and Bihar Police. Later, various online campaigns surfaced demanding a CBI investigation into the matter. These campaigns were fuelled by many conspiracy theories.

In August 2020, the centre told the Supreme Court that it had accepted the Bihar government’s recommendation for a CBI probe into the actor’s death. Later, the CBI filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Rhea Chakraborty, her brother Showik, common friend Samuel Miranda, and three others. In a statement, the CBI said,

CBI has registered a case related to the death of Sushant Singh Rajput on the request of Bihar government and further notification from GoI and taken over the investigation of the case, earlier registered at police station Rajiv Nagar, Patna vide FIR no.241/2020 dated 25-7-2020. The case was registered against six accused and others.” ^[5]The Economic Times

She also came under the scanner of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for an investigation into Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. Both the agencies summoned her and questioned her for hours. After questioning her for consecutive three days, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested her on 8 September 2020. The NCB said that its investigation was based on WhatsApp chats retrieved from Rhea Chakraborty’s phone in which they found conversations around procuring drugs, allegedly for Sushant Singh Rajput. The NCB also claimed that on orders from Rhea and Showik Chakraborty, Dipesh Sawant (a member of Sushant Singh Rajput’s domestic staff) collected and delivered a total of 165 grams of marijuana between March 2020 and June 2020. ^[6]NDTV She was booked under Section 27 A of the under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. On the same day, a magistrate’s court remanded her to 14-day judicial custody, and after spending the night of 8 September 2020 (Tuesday) at the NCB office, Rhea was, on 9 September 2020 (Wednesday), moved to the Byculla Jail. After a magistrate’s court rejected her bail plea, Rhea moved the special court where, in her plea, she stated that she was innocent and accused the NCB of ‘falsely implicating’ her in the case. ^[7]The Hindustan Times On 11 September 2020, the special court also rejected her bail request. ^[8]NDTV After spending almost a month, she was granted cash bail of Rs. 1 lakh by the Bombay High Court on 7 October 2020. ^[9]The Hindu Rhea, her brother Showik, and others were named in draft charges filed by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in connection with a drug case linked to Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. ^[10]The Hindu On 13 July 2022, she was charged by the NCB in a drug case involving Sushant Singh Rajput.
