Tajdar’s father, Kamal Amrohi, was a prominent film director, screenwriter, and poet. His mother’s name was Sayeda Al-Zehra Mehmoodi who was a homemaker. Mahmoodi died on 9 April 1982 in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh.

Tajdar has two siblings, a brother, Shandaar, who died on died on 21 August 2011 in Goa, and a sister, Rukhsar, who is a poet.

Tajdar is married to Nilofar Amrohi, a writer and poet, and sister of the actor Mazhar Khan. The couple has two sons, Bilal Amrohi, and Mashhoor Amrohi.

Other Relative

Tajdar Amrohi is the stepson of Meena Kumari, a well-known Indian actress. Tajdar used to share a deep bond with Meena Kumari and call her ‘Chhoti Ammi.’ Recalling her in an interview, he said,

Choti Ammi never took Baba away from us. She never asked him to leave us. She respected my mother. She gave me no reason to hate her. I grew extremely fond of her. Having said that, Choti Ammi remained the love of his life.”

Career

Film

In 1983, Tajdar Amrohi made his directorial debut with the film ‘Razia Sultan.’ It was the last film of his father, Kamal Amrohi.

Later, Tajdar directed films such as ‘Ek Number ka Chor’ (1990), ‘Mera Mulk Mera Paigam’ (2001). He produced a few films including ‘Shankar Hussain’ (1977), ‘Hum Sey Hai Jahaan’ (2008), and ‘Duniyadari’ (2017). The film ‘Hum Sey Hai Jahaan’ was written and directed by Tajdar’s son Mashhoor Amrohi who also played the lead role in the film.

Controversies

Legal Action Against Manish Malhotra

Reportedly, Tajdar Amrohi threatened legal action against designer Manish Malhotra, who is going to make his directorial debut with the biopic based on the life of Meena Kumari. He alleged that Manish Malhotra cannot make a film based on his mother’s life without his consent. Tajdar also advised Kriti Sanon who is going to portray Meena Kumari in the film to refrain from portraying Meena Kumari on the screen to safeguard the legendary actress’ reputation.

Later, Tajdar apologised to Kriti Sanon for his harsh words and clarified that he is not filing a suit yet as the shooting of the film is not started yet. ^[2]The Indian Express

Slammed Kangana Ranaut

Tajdar slammed Kangana Ranaut when she alleged that a legendary actress like Meena Kumari too suffered Halala and Triple Talaq’s havoc. In an interview Tajdar said,

Kangana is stupid and illiterate. She left her study at the age of 15 and have no common sense which is why I’m not taking any action against her otherwise I would have sued her in a defamation case.” ^[3]The Times of India

• Tajdar’s both sons are working in the film industry as actors, directors and producers.

• Tajdar was not on good terms with her brother Shaandar and sister Rukhsar over the property issues.
• Preity Zinta was involved in the property issue of the Amrohi family. Reportedly, Preity was adopted by the younger brother of Tajdar, Shandar.
• In an interview, Tajdar claimed if it weren’t for him, Pakeezah wouldn’t have been made.
