IT Raids in 2023

On 6 December 2023, the Income Tax department launched marathon raids against Boudh Distillery Private Limited, an Odisha-based distillery company, and its promoters on charges of tax evasion and unaccounted transactions. The distillery company is owned by Dhiraj Prasad Sahu and his family. A total of Rs. 351 crore cash was found at Dhiraj Prasad Sahu’s residence in Ranchi. Raids were also carried out at Sabalpur, Bolangir, Titilagarh, Boudh, Sudargarh, Rourkela, and Bhubaneswar. According to some reports, it was the largest cash seizure ever carried out by an agency in India against a single group and businesses associated with it.

Later, Jairam Ramesh, the Congress general secretary, released a statement regarding the issue and said,

The Indian National Congress is in no way connected with the businesses of Dheeraj Sahu, MP. Only he can explain, and should explain, how huge amounts of cash have been reportedly unearthed by the Income Tax authorities from his properties.”

Other BJP members alleged Dhiraj of misusing his powers and his close relationship with Rahul Gandhi. Deepak Prakash, former BJP State president and Rajya Sabha member, said,

This corruption cannot happen without the support of the JMM (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha) government running the state. Congress and corruption have a close relationship. Whenever Congress has come to power, whether it is at the Centre or in State, rampant corruption has taken place. Dhiraj Sahu has a close relationship with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.”

Meanwhile, an old tweet from August 2022, made by Dhiraj Prasad Sahu, went viral on social media in which he expressed his views on black money prevailing in the country even after the demonetisation.

Later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought attention to these raids on Twitter and promised to “guarantee” the return of all funds “looted from the public.”
