Hrishita Basu is an Indian cricketer who plays as a wicketkeeper batter for the national U-19 team. She was a part of the India Women Under-19 team that won that became the inaugural champions of the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup on 29 January 2023, beating England by 36 balls and 7 wickets.

Growing up in Vivekanandapally in the Balitikuri area of ​​Howrah, she used to play gully cricket with boys in the neighbourhood. She attended St. Thomas’ Church School, Howrah. Athletic since childhood, she would play multiple sports at school including basketball, football, and kho-kho. When she was 13, she joined LRS Bangla Sports Academy, a free academy run by former Bengal captain Laxmi Ratan Shukla.

Hrishita Basu belongs to a Bengali family. In an interview, she talked about her sports-enthusiast family and said that her father, Niladri Basu, used to play cricket, and her mother, Malvika Basu, was a gymnast. Hrishita has a brother and a sister. Her sister, Ihita Basu Thapa, works at Sunknowledge and is an athlete. Her elder brother used to play cricket at the second-division club level in Kolkata, but later, he quit the sport to focus on his academics.

Career

Hrishita Basu was selected for Bengal Women’s U19 team when she was 15. She made her debut for Bengal Women’s U19 team against Goa. In the match, Bengal was 7 wickets down for 19 runs when she came to bat. Her impeccable performance with the bat along with Srilekha Roy led to Bengal’s victory, with Basu scoring 43 and Roy contributing 33 not out. She played for India A in the Women’s Under-19 T20 Challenger Trophy (2022). She was a part of India A squad which won the Quadrangular Women’s U19 T20 Series in 2022.  In November 2022, she was named to the India U19 Women’s squad for the home series against New Zealand. In December 2022, she was named to the India Women Under-19s squad for a tour of South Africa 2022/23. Thereafter, she was named in India’s squad for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. The squad consisted of Shafali Verma (captain), Shweta Sehrawat (vice-captain), Richa Ghosh (wicket-keeper), G Trisha, Soumya Tiwari, Sonia Mendhiya, Parshavi Chopra, Sonam Yadav, Mannat Kashyap, Hurley Gala, Archana Devi, Titas Sadhu, Falak Naz, Shabnam MD. The tournament took place in January 2023 in South Africa.
