Tim David

Tim David is an Australian cricketer of Singaporean origin. He plays for the Australian national cricket team mainly as a Middle-order batsman. Previously, David represented the Singapore national cricket team for around a year.

Tim David, also known as Timothy Hays David [1]Aaj Tak, was born on Saturday, 16 March 1996 (age 27 years; as of 2023) in Singapore. His zodiac sign is Pisces. His family has its roots in Australia from where his father moved to Singapore in the 1990s to work as an engineer. When Tim was two years old, his parents moved back to Australia amid the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Tim grew up in Perth, Australia. He did his schooling at Scotch College, Melbourne. Watching his father play cricket for Singapore national cricket team, fueled Tim’s passion for cricket. At the age of three, he accompanied his father at the Creswell Park and Belvista Oval where his father went on to play Fourth Grade cricket for Claremont-Nedlands Cricket Club (CNCC). In addition, His father also headed up the local MILO Have-A-Go youth cricket program. Talking about it in an interview, Tim said,

That’s my earliest memory: being down at Creswell Park and Belvista Oval, which is our second ground, from when I was three years old.”

At the age of 8, David started playing for Claremont-Nedlands Cricket Club’s (CNCC) Under-10 team. He progressed through the age-group system along with the likes of Joel Paris, Matt Kelly, Will Bosisto, and Durham opener Cameron Steel. While many of his contemporaries started playing first-grade cricket at a young age, David kept playing second-grade cricket for CNCC for many years.

Domestic

In 2018-19, he was offered a state contract by Western Australia. However, he never made the cut as a senior player. Taking rejection in his stride, Tim threw himself into white ball cricket, playing for Singapore. He has also played for Western Australia Under 23 and Western Australia XI.

International

T20

Tim was included in the training squad for the Singapore cricket team in July 2019. A few days later, he was named in Singapore’s Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for the Regional Finals of the 2018–19 ICC T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier tournament. On 22 July 2019, he made his T20 International debut for Singapore against Qatar, playing in Singapore. Tim scored 38 runs off 29 balls in his debut match, hitting 1 sixer and 3 fours; Singapore defeated Qatar by 33 runs in the match. Tim was named in Singapore’s squad for the 2019 ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament in October 2019. The tournament was held in the United Arab Emirates. He was named as the player to watch in Singapore’s squad by the International Cricket Council (ICC) ahead of the tournament. He represented Singapore 14 times at T20 level.

After playing for Singapore national cricket team for around a year, Tim David became a part of the Australian national cricket team for the 2022 World Cup. In the same year, he was also selected in the Australian squad for their series against India. Tim made his T20 International debut for Australia on 20 September 2022, playing against India in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali), Punjab. In the third match of the series in Hyderabad, Telangana, Tim smashed 54 runs off 27 balls.

List A

Tim was named in the Singapore national cricket team for the 2019 Malaysia Cricket World Cup Challenge League A tournament in September 2019. On 17 September he played his debut List A match for Singapore against Qatar in the Cricket World Cup Challenge League A tournament. He scored 369 runs in five matches, becoming the leading run-scorer in the tournament.

ODI

Tim David made his ODI debut for Australia against South Africa on 9 September 2023; the match was held at Bloemfontein, South Africa.

Franchise Cricket

Big Bash League

On 1 January 2018, Tim David made his T20 debut for Perth Scorchers against Sydney Sixers in the 2017–18 season of the Big Bash League (BBL). Despite making a Big Bash contract with Perth Scorchers, Tim initially struggled to play regular matches for the franchise.

He was bought by Hobart Hurricanes during the 2020–21 season of the Big Bash League. In the opening match against Sydney Sixers, Tim scored 58 runs, leading his team to victory; David was named the player of the match. Following the expiry of his BBL contract with Hobart Hurricanes, David signed a two-year extension with the franchise in February 2022.

Pakistan Super League

In May 2021, Tim David was signed up by Lahore Qalandars for the 2021 Pakistan Super League, as a replacement for Joe Burns.

In the 2022 season of the Pakistan Super League, David was signed by reigning champions Multan Sultans.

Hoofdklasse tournament

In July 2021, David played in the Hoofdklasse tournament in the Netherlands.

Royal London One-Day Cup

In July 2021, Tim David played for Surrey against Warwickshire in the 2021 Royal London One-Day Cup, scoring his first century in List A cricket with an unbeaten 140 runs. In the quarter-finals of the tournament, Tim scored 102 runs, helping Surrey to beat Gloucestershire by five wickets. He scored 20 sixes (maximum) in the tournament.

Caribbean Premier League (CPL)

In the 2021 Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Tim gave an impressive performance for Saint Lucia Kings. He amassed 282 runs in the tournament at a strike rate of 146.11. Tim was the third-highest run-scorer in the competition.

T20 Blast

In 2021, Tim David played for Surrey County Cricket Club in the last two matches of the 2021 T20 Blast in England.

The Hundred

Tim David represented Southern Brave for the inaugural season of The Hundred in 2021. In the final match of the tournament, David scored a six-ball 15, leading Southern Brave to win. He also took a catch in the match and also effected a crucial run out of Liam Livingstone. He again represented Southern Brave in the 2022 season of The Hundred.

Indian Premier League

In 2021, Tim David was bought by the Indian Premier League franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore for his base price of Rs. 20 lakhs. He played for RCB during the second phase of IPL 2021 in the UAE as a replacement for New Zealand’s opening batter Finn Allen. On 24 September 2021, Tim played his debut IPL match for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Chennai Super Kings, becoming the first international player from Singapore to play in the IPL.

In 2022, during the Indian Premier League auctions, Tim was signed up by Mumbai Indians for Rs. 8.25 crores. On 30 April 2023, during the 42nd IPL match of the 2023 season, Tim smashed an unbeaten 45 runs off 14 balls, hammering three back-to-back sixes in the final over of the run chase to seal a six-wicket win for Mumbai Indians against Rajasthan Royals.

Talking about his performance in the post-match press conference, Tim said,

I’ve been really hungry to finish a game like that. It feels amazing. The boys are excited. The other boys had been putting up big performances, so I was waiting for my turn. So, really pleased.”

David has amassed 300-plus runs at a staggering strike rate of 189.56 in his brief 17-match IPL career.
