Career

Player

He played for his school and college level teams and later played for Cheerful and New Blues teams in A-Division local leagues. He could not play at the higher level as his father did not support him and later became a coach.

Coach

In an interview with Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, T Dilip revealed that he realised his passion for coaching when he used to help some local boys and give cricket tips to them. He said that he later started to play as a player cum coach for some local clubs. He used to teach maths to children to earn money while he was struggling financially. In 2004, he attended a Level – 1 coaching session and came out in Top – 3.

Starting from 2008, he became the fielding coach of the Under-14, Under-16, Under-19, Under-20, and Under-25 teams of Hyderabad Cricket Association Academy and met Ramakrishnan Sridhar (popularly known as R Sridhar) there, the former Indian fielding coach who guided Dilip about the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

In 2009, he started working for the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Deccan Chargers where he was assistant fielding coach to Mike Young, a baseball and Australian cricket coach. From 2008 to 2019, he also worked with many junior Ranji teams and various other women’s, zonal, and national teams of junior boys where he guided Axar Patel and Shubman Gill who later played for India. In 2017, he became the fielding coach of India A for the series against Bangladesh. Between 2007 and 2019, he did a Level-A Refresher course in Hyderabad, a Level-B Refresher course in Bengaluru, and later a Level-C Refresher course at NCA.

He later worked with many fielding coaches such as Trevor Penney and Jonty Rhodes. In November 2021, he was appointed as the fielding coach of the Indian national team and worked alongside Rahul Dravid. He became one of those coaches who never played for India.

He became famous for the medal ceremonies after matches in the 2023 ODI World Cup where they gave the best fielding medal to the players for their performance.

  • T Dilip revealed in an interview that he did a communication skills course from a UK-based tutor during the initial COVID-19 lockdown as he had issues with his public speaking abilities. He said that he got very tense while speaking in front of Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli in the Indian dressing room. Vijay Mohanraj of Hyderabad Cricket Academy encouraged him to work on his communication skills.
