Falak Naz

Falak Naz is an Indian cricketer who is known for being part of the ICC Under-19 Indian Women’s team that won the T20 World Cup in South Africa. She is a right-hand batsman and right-arm medium bowler.

Falak Mohd Nasir Naz was born on Sunday, 7 November 2004 (age 18 years; as of 2022) in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. She did her schooling at Arya Girls Inter College, Allahabad, but to learn cricket, she took admission to Dr Kailash Nath Katju Inter College, Kydganj. Falak was born into a poor family because of which her brother had to leave his studies and start working at a cycle repair shop so that he could feed the seven members of their family. She lives with her family in a single-room, tin-roofed house near the banks of the Yamuna river in the Katghar area of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.

She started playing cricket for fun and later, she developed a passion for the game and decided to make a career as a cricketer. She started playing cricket at the age of 12. She did not take admission to any sports academy because her father was unable to pay the fees. In 2015, her cricket coach Ajay Yadav decided to train her for free. She used to play cricket with the boys in her locality. She used to study in a school in their village, but to support his daughter, her father took Falak to a new school Dr Kailash Nath Katju Inter-College. There was a girl’s cricket team in her school and the coach opened an academy for girls. In an interview, her coach said that she used to play three matches in a day and all of them were against boys. She used to practice for 9-10 hours a day. She wanted to become a fast bowler but also improved her batting and bowling so that she could become an all-rounder.

Cricket

In 2016, she was selected for the Uttar Pradesh junior women’s cricket team. After her performance in the match, she became part of the under-19 Indian women’s cricket team. In 2018, she played the Bold Trophy tournament organized by Uttar Pradesh Cricket Academy. On 1 December 2022, she played the T20 match against New Zealand women’s team held in Mumbai. In December 2022, she was selected to be part of the under-19 national team for the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup which won the match in South Africa.

Facts/Trivia

  • Falak often gives credit for her success to her family and her coach Ajay Yadav. In an interview, she said that not many women in her hometown played cricket, but her family and coach always encouraged her a lot to play cricket.

  • In an interview, her father said that he got a lot of inspiration to support his daughter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s campaign ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ and the 2016 Bollywood film Dangal.
