Niranjan Pujari entered politics when the regional party BJD fought the Odisha Assembly poll for the first time in 2000.

Niranjan Pujari started his political journey in 2000 by contesting the Odisha Legislative Assembly from the Binka constituency on a ticket from Biju Janta Dal (BJD) party. He won the Odisha Legislative Assembly elections from Binka in 2000. In 2004, he won the 13th Odisha Legislative Assembly elections from the Binka constituency. Minister

On 10 May 2011, Niranjan Pujari was appointed as the Minister of Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare. He served the post till 2 August 2012. From 10 February 2012 to 2 August 2012, Niranjan served as the Minister of Science and Technology. He held the portfolio of Minister of Industries and Minister of Excise from 2 August 2012 to 21 May 2014. On 7 May 2017, Niranjan was appointed as the Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs; he served the post till 28 May 2019. He again served as the Minister of Industries from 7 May 2017 to 2 March 2018. From 3 March 2018 to 28 May 2019, he served as the Minister of Water Resources. He held the portfolio of Minister of Excise from 29 May 2019 to 4 June 2022. On 5 June 2022, he was appointed as the Minister of Finance.

Niranjan became the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs on 5 June 2022. In 2017, he resigned from his post soon after Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced the re-shuffle of the council of ministers. Niranjan refused to disclose the reason behind his resignation to the media; however, in an interview, he mentioned that he wanted to devote more time to the people of his constituency.
