AP Singh is a Supreme Court Lawyer. He has advocated in the defence of the four convicts in the 2012 “Nirbhaya Gang-Rape Case.”

Ajay Prakash Singh, hails from Uttar Pradesh, whereas, he resides in Delhi along with his family. Besides being a law graduate from the Dr Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University, Lucknow, he has also obtained a Juris Doctorate degree, in Criminology. Altogether, he is considered a well-educated lawyer. He has been practising in the Supreme Court of India since 1997. He rose to infamy in 2013, when he came forward to take up the case of two of the four convicts- Akshay Kumar Singh and Vinay Sharma- in the 2012 “Nirbhaya Gang-rape Case,” when no other advocate was willing to fight in the defence. Later, he took the cases of the other two convicts.

  • AP Singh says, his mother has insisted him to take up the case of Nirbhaya Gang-rape convicts, on seeing the distress of one of the convict’s family.
  • If my daughter or my sister engages in pre-marital or meretricious relationship, or if she lowers her moral standards and character, i will definitely burn her alive in front of my family members.”

AP Singh made this statement during an interview, in 2013. This led to mass outrage across the country, and subsequently, he was heavily criticised by the public. Referring to his statement, he said that, he gave this statement in a fit of the moment, as the interviewer was constantly getting too personal and had irked and incited him to stoop down to that level, and consequently make that statement.

  • Singh has maintained an antagonist image for himself, even after being repeatedly questioned for his tenacity towards saving the three of the four convicted in the 2012 Nirbhaya Rape Case, he continued to defend the convicts Pawan Gupta, Akshay Kumar Singh, Mukesh Kumar, and Vinay Sharma.

  • All four of the convicts Pawan Gupta, Akshay Kumar Singh, and Vinay Sharma in Nirbhaya Gang-rape case were hanged till death at Delhi’s Tihar jail, at 5:30 am on 20 March 2020.

  • AP Sharma has also lost a famous defence case of the self-proclaimed godman Rampal. Rampal has been sentenced to life in prison till death, after being proven guilty in two murder cases, related to in the killings of four women and a child close to his Satlok Ashram in Haryana, in 2014.
