In 2020, H. P. Swaroop contested in and won the Karnataka Gram Panchayat elections on a ticket from Janata Dal (Secular) following which he became a member of the Zilla Panchayat, Hassan. Thereafter, he became the vice president of the Zilla Panchayat. He contested the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections on Janata Dal (Secular)’s ticket from the Hassan Constituency and emerged victorious.
