Alamgir Khan Tareen was born in 1961 (age 63 years; at the time of death) in Multan, Punjab, Pakistan. From 1971 to 1976, he completed his schooling at CCH: Cadet College, Hasanabdal, Punjab. He pursued a Bachelor’s degree at the University of California, Berkeley and later a Master’s degree at Yale University, Connecticut. He has an elder brother named Jahangir Khan Tareen, a businessman and politician-founder of the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP), and a sister named Seemi Azdi, a politician of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf party and senator in the Pakistan parliament.

Career
Business
He joined his father’s company, Shamin & Company Private Limited, Multan’s biggest bottle manufacturer for Pepsico., in the 1990s and eventually became its Managing Director (MD). He operated the biggest water purification plant in Pakistan.
Cricket Franchise
He bought Multan Sultans, a team in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), in partnership with his nephew, Ali Khan Tareen, through Multan Consortium for $6.35 million in 2018.
In 2021, he became the sole owner of Multan Sultans after purchasing Ali’s share in the franchise. Multan Sultans later won the sixth season of PSL in 2021. He was credited for incorporating a data-based approach in Multan Sultans.
Death
Alamgir Tareen committed suicide on 6 July 2023 by shooting himself in the head with a pistol at his residence in Gulberg, Lahore. He was found dead by his housemaid Alamdar who got suspicious when Alamgir did not open his room despite repeated knocks on the door. Allegedly, Police found a suicide near his body in which Alamgir reportedly cited a disease due to which he was forced to commit suicide. After the news of his death became viral, many people paid tribute to him on social media platforms, and a few also cited the need to give importance to mental health.
Facts/Trivia
- Two suicide letters, one in English and the other in Urdu, became viral after his death. Allegedly, both were written by him; however, many people claimed that both of these were fake.
- His alleged fiance, Shazo, claimed after his death that he was not suffering from any serious physical condition; however, she did not give any reason for his suicide.
