In 1990, Indrani Mukerjea left her children with her parents in Guwahati and moved to Kolkata to study computers. After moving to Kolkata, she met Sanjeev Khanna, whom she married in 1993, and had a daughter named Vidhie Mukerjea, who was born in 1997. They moved to Mumbai in 2001 and got divorced in 2002.

In 2002, she met Peter Mukerjea, a British television executive, and married him in November. Vidhie Mukerjea was then adopted by Peter Mukerjea. In 2012, Indrani obtained UK citizenship through her marriage to Peter Mukerjea, and they lived in Mumbai, Bristol, UK, and Marbella, Spain, until 2015. During her school days, she was in a relationship with Bishnu Kumar Choudhary. From 1984 to 1989, she dated Siddhartha Das. Thereafter, she was in a relationship with Sanjeev Khanna. Later, she dated Peter Mukerjea.

Career

In 1996, Indrani started a recruitment company called INX Services Private Limited in Kolkata. By 2001, she moved to Mumbai, where her firm served clients like Reliance Industries and STAR India. In 2005, her company partnered with IMD International Search Group and appointed Indrani as its regional director for Asia Pacific.

In December 2006, Indrani and Peter Mukerjea became promoters of the INX Group with a 50% stake in INX Media (now 9X Media). Soon, INX News was started, with Indrani holding a majority stake through her holding company. Peter joined INX Media in August 2007 as chairman and chief strategy officer, while Indrani became its CEO in November 2007.

Later, INX Media launched several channels, but it faced some financial troubles due to the 2007–08 global financial crisis. Due to some financial misconduct within the company, it was sold in January 2009. Indrani and Peter Mukerjea resigned from their management positions in March 2009 and sold their stake in April 2010. They resigned from the board of directors in May 2011.

Controversies

INX Media Trouble

In 2007, Indrani Mukerjea, the chairman of INX News, disputed with the CEO of the firm Vir Sanghvi over control, leading to Sanghvi’s resignation in January 2008. Mukerjea then fired five NewsX journalists, which led to further resignations and complaints to government officials about INX Media’s funding. This started a legal action against NewsX for the unfair dismissal of two journalists. ^[4]Business Standard

INX Media Investigation

After Sanghvi left INX News, many talented individuals left NewsX. Thereafter, the Mukerjeas sold INX Media to Indi Media Network, which was partly owned by Vinay Chhajlani. Meanwhile, a 2013 SFIO report uncovered INX News’ connections to Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Limited and Nai Dunia, which motivated SFIO to take legal action for suspicious share sales and other violations. ^[5]Outlook India

Financial Investigations Resumed

In 2010, the Enforcement Directorate started investigating three Mauritius-based companies for diverting money to INX Media without proper approval. The investigation stopped in 2013, but in 2014, tax authorities found evidence suggesting the Mukerjeas had moved a large amount of money through Mauritius. Sheena Bora Murder Case

In 2015, Indrani Mukerjea was arrested by Mumbai Police for her daughter Sheena Bora’s alleged murder in 2012. She went to jail in Byculla, Mumbai. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the case and charged Indrani under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. ^[7]The Times of India

CBI claimed that she and her husband, Peter Mukerjea, moved money from INX Media to an offshore account in Sheena Bora’s name, possibly as a reason for her murder. Sheena was also dating Peter’s son from a previous marriage, which Indrani did not approve of.

In 2015, the case gained attention when Indrani’s driver, Shyam Rai, told the police that she and her ex-husband had killed Sheena in a car. They strangled Sheena, burned her, and buried her in Raigad forests, according to the Mumbai police commissioner. ^[8]India TV

• According to official records, she was born in 1972. However, Siddhartha Das, Indrani Mukherjee’s ex-husband, once claimed in the media that her real age should be at least 7 years older than what the records show.

• Reportedly, after her marriage to Peter Mukerjea, she introduced her children (with the first partner) to him as siblings. Sheena Bora began living with Peter and Indrani in 2006 and disappeared in April 2012.

• While in jail, Indrani Mukerjea said in court that she translated some verses of the Bhagavad Gita into English and wanted to publish it.
