Urfi Javed was born on Tuesday, 15 October 1996 (age 26 years; as of 2022) in Lucknow. Her zodiac sign is Libra. She did her schooling at City Montessori School, Lucknow. She completed her graduation in Mass Communication from Amity University, Lucknow. ^[1]India Today

According to Urfi, while growing up in Lucknow, she was mentally and physically tortured by her father. In an interview, she talked about this and said,

Growing up in Lucknow, I did not understand why I was stopped from dressing a certain way. I was mentally and physically abused; I even tried comitting suicide but in that one moment, I decided to give my life a second chance. I ran away to Delhi. I was just 17. I began taking tuitions to support myself. Later, I started working in a call center. Soon, I decided to go and try my luck in Mumbai. I had no money or place to live so I used to stay at my friends’ houses. I did odd jobs, giving interviews and even gave auditions.” ^[2]News 18

She expressed in an interview that his ex-boyfriend Paras, stood in the way of her career when she was approached for Star Plus’s extremely popular show Anupama. She said that both she and Paras were supposed to work in the show but Paras asked the team to not cast her. ^[7]India Today She said,

We were supposed to work together in a show, I guess Anupamaa only. He requested the creative director and everyone to not cast me in the show. Whenever there is even a slight chance of me being in the show, he would request the team to not cast me. Because apparently, his girlfriend present or ex would not like it.”

To be very honest, I don’t believe in Islam and I’ve never believed in it. I feel a lot of things in Islam are a bit regressive but so are in other religions as well. The world is changing at a very fast pace but religions are not and just because of that reason some people are lagging behind. This is the main reason behind the generation gap because people are not ready to change. I don’t like the fact that Islam allows four weddings. Triple talaq was banned and I think it was for the best.”

She further added,

In Islam also there are many things that women should wear burkha and they should stay behind a parda, I don’t understand these things. If a girl wants to do it willingly then it is fine. One should not force something on others.”

In another interview, she said that she would never marry a Muslim man. ^[9]India Today She said,

I am a Muslim girl. Most of the hate comments I receive are from Muslim people. They say that I am tarnishing the image of Islam. They hate me because Muslim men want their women to behave in a certain way. They want to control all the women in the community. I don’t believe in Islam because of this. The reason why they troll me is because I don’t behave the way they expect me to as per their religion.”

Television

Urfi began her career in 2015 with the TV serial Tedi Medi Family. She went to Mumbai for a job interview which did not work out for her. However, given the interest she had in acting since her childhood, she decided to give auditions and in a matter of 3 months, she bagged her first role in the serial. ^[10]The Times Of India In 2016, she bagged the role of Avni Pant in comedy-drama, Bade Bhaiyya Ki Dulhania, which aired on Sony TV. She also appeared in serials like Chandra Nandini, Bepannaah, Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, and Jiji Maa. She was also a contestant in Bigg Boss OTT but was the first person to get eliminated from the show. Later, she appeared as a guest in Bigg Boss OTT 2; her entry inside Bigg Boss house became viral, where she appeared in a leather skirt, adorned with accentuated screws.

In 2021, she starred in her debut web series, Puncch Beat 2. She did the role of Meera.

Controversies

Row with casting director Obed Afridi

Urfi posted a series of stories in February 2022, disclosing the fact that casting director Obed Afridi did not pay her dues. She further accused him of exploiting young girls in the name of getting them work and modelling assignments. She posted various screenshots of chats in which the accused is asking for semi-nude pictures from girls and asking them to do a video call for indecent acts. Various celebrities such as Priyank Sharma and Nikita Bhamidipati stood up in her support and posted stories to unmask the accused while expressing their similar encounters with him.

Chetan Bhagat’s ‘distraction’ comment

When Chetan Bhagat spoke at a literary event organized by a media company in November 2022, he mentioned the name of Urfi Javed while asserting that young people were spending a great deal of time on Instagram. Mr. Bhagat said,

Phone has been a great distraction for the youth, especially the boys, spending hours just watching Instagram Reels. Everyone knows who Urfi Javed is. What will you do with her photos? Is it coming in your exams or you will go for a job interview and tell the interviewer that you know all her outfits? On one side, there is a youth who is protecting our nation at Kargil and on another side, we have another youth who is seeing Uorfi Javed’s photos hiding in their blankets.”

The comment attracted controversy, and while reacting to his comment, Urfi Javed backlashed at the author through an Instagram story in which she wrote,

Men like him will always blame the women than accept their own shortcomings. Stop promoting rape culture you sickos out there. Blaming women’s clothes for the behaviour of men is so 80s Mr Chetan Bhagat.” ^[11]NDTV

Urfi Javed vs Raj Kundra

In October 2023, a short-lived altercation started between Urfi Javed and businessman Raj Kundra when he made a joke about Urfi’s choices of fashion during a stand-up gig. Urfi, however, later responded to Raj’s comments and called him a “Porn King.” She shared a note on her Instagram story which read,

Dosro ko nanga kar k paise kamane wala ab meri kapdo pe comment karega 🙂 Sorry not sorry porn king (sic).”

About two days after posting this on Instagram, Urfi announced her collaboration with Raj Kundra following which she was trolled by many users on the internet. ^[12]News 18

Halloween Look Sparked Hindu Sentiment

Urfi Javed’s look as actor Rajpal Yadav‘s Chota Pandit from the film Bhool Bhulaiyaa for the 2023 Halloween attracted negative responses from netizens. According to many users, Urfi’s look hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus. She, however, later addressed the matter through a post on Instagram and said that no colour, agarbatti (incense stick), or flower belongs to any religion. Violation of the Law of the Land

On 3 November 2023, a video featuring Urfi Javed gained widespread attention as it showed her being detained by police officers in Mumbai. In the video, Urfi inquired about the reasons for her arrest and the person who ordered the arrest, to which the officials expressed concerns about her attire—a bold backless red top and denim pants. They instructed her to address her questions at the police station and then escorted her to a police vehicle. On the same day, i.e., 3 November 2023, the Mumbai police booked Urfi Javed for sharing a fake video of her being arrested by the Mumbai police for publicity. The case was filed at the Oshiwara Police Station against Urfi and others involved under IPC Sections 171, 419, 500, and 34. • In an interview, Urfi recalled the time when her pictures were uploaded on a porn site. She said,
  

  I was in the first year of my college in Lucknow when someone mischievously uploaded my pictures on a porn website and all hell broke loose when my dad got to know about it. I come from a very conservative family and my dad then without listening to my side of the story, thrashed me badly.”

• She ran away from her house to escape the patriarchal environment with her two sisters and lived in a park for a week in Delhi. She took a job in a call centre and supported her entire family after her father remarried.

  People have cooked up stories just because my entire name is Urfi Javed. But he was never associated with me in any way. Even if his own granddaughter wears anything of her choice what’s wrong with that? Why is he being held responsible for that?”
