Subha Venkatesan

Subha Venkatesan is an Indian athlete who participates in the 4x400m relay and 400m sprint categories. Subha participated in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. At the 2022 Asian Games, Subha won a silver medal in the 4x400m mixed relay along with teammates Vithya Ramraj, Muhammad Ajmal Variyathodi, and Rajesh Ramesh. She also won the silver medal for the 4x400m relay at the 2022 Asian Games.

Subha Venkatesan was born on Tuesday, 31 August 1999 (age 24 years; as of 2023) in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. She studied at the Boiler Plant Middle School in Tiruverambur, Tiruchirappalli. Subha later joined the Bentinck Higher Secondary School in Chennai once she was selected to the Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Girls, Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai. The CoE is run by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu.

Subha Venkatesan’s father’s name is Venkatesan. He is a construction worker. Subha’s mother’s name is Poongodi, and she is a homemaker. Subha’s mother encouraged her to focus on sports from a young age. Subha has two older siblings, a sister, and a brother.

Career

Subha Venkatesan started participating in athletic sports when she was in school. Subha got her first pair of running shoes when she was in 7th standard, but had started winning races long before this. Once Subha joined the Centre of Excellence for Girls in Chennai, she went home once a year during vacation and spent the rest of her time training and attending school. When Subha was in school, her brother-in-law (sister’s husband) used to help her by buying sports gear. Subha trained under Coach Indira Suresh during her time at the CoE. In 2016, Subha was selected to join the senior-level national camp (at the Sports Authority of India – Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala) in Patiala, Punjab. She trained under Coach Galina Bukharina during her time at the camp. While talking about her coaching, Subha said,

We do a lot of running workouts, weights and power track-running while pulling a 25kg weight plate-uphill running. We do several sets of running. We train in the morning and evening.”

Subha Venkatesan, Revathi V., Dhanlakshmi Sekhar, Sarthak Bhambri, and Alex Antony qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the 4x400m mixed relay category.

In an interview, Subha said,

My interest to participate in the Olympics grew a lot after watching the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Since then, my aim has been to be called an Olympian and I always wanted to be one. Representing the country on this platform is an experience in itself and Olympics is the pinnacle of sport…When the Olympics trials came, I was determined to give my best. It was something that I wanted to achieve, I wanted to be there and here was my chance.”

The relay team came 15th during Heat 2 of the Tokyo Olympics. In 2023, Subha Venkatesan and her mixed relay team (including Rajesh Ramesh, Aishwarya Mishra, and Amoj Jacob) initially secured the bronze medal by clocking in a time of 3:14.34 seconds in the 4x400m relay during the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. However, the Indian team’s medal was upgraded to silver following the disqualification of the Sri Lankan (3:14.25 seconds) team due to a lane infringement violation. Additionally, Subha Venkatesan also won a silver medal in the 4X400 women’s relay race during the same competition.
