Deepak Nehra is an Indian wrestler, who participates in the 97 kg men’s category. He won a bronze medal in the men’s 97 kg freestyle wrestling at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Career

At the age of 5, Deepak’s father noticed that he was interested in sports. So, his father enrolled him in a wrestling training centre Akhada Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Kushti Academy, Mirchpur, Hisar. He then started his training under his coach Ajay Dhanda and later, he started participating in various wrestling competitions like Junior World Wrestling Championship (2021) and Senior Under-23 Asia Championship. In 2022, he participated in The World Ranking series and won a bronze medal in it. Deepak won a bronze in the men’s 97kg freestyle at the Commonwealth Games, Birmingham (2022). He defeated the wrestler Tayyab Raza Awan from Pakistan by a 10-2 score in the event. On winning, Deepak said,

I want to thank God. It was my first competition and I won a medal. I will try to win gold in the 2024 Olympics. I came for the medal and won it.”

 

His coaches are Ajay Dhanda and Jai Bhagwan Lather.

Facts/Trivia

  • Deepak was born in a poor family. In an interview, talking about the same, Deepak said,

    My father, Surinder Singh Nehra, was a peasant, who studied till 12th standard, while my mother, Mukesh Kumari, is a homemaker, who studied till 10th standard. We did not have a TV set, and our neighbours used to tell my family whether I win or lose a match.”

  • His favourite moves in wrestling are ‘double-leg’ and ‘ankle lace.’
  • During an interview, he shared that he used to practice 8 hours a day before competing in the Commonwealth Games 2022.
