Career

Muhammad Ajmal Variyathodi started his sports journey as a soccer player while growing up in Palakkad. He participated in U-19 state-level football until his coach, Nanda Kumar, advised him to shift his focus from football to running. This gave birth to Muhammad Ajmal Variyathodi as a 400-meter sprinter. He initially started his journey as a 100-meter sprinter but transitioned into a 400-meter sprinter with his practice and the guidance of coaches.

He got his first chance to compete internationally in 2019. He participated in the Summer Universiade in Naples. In the 200-meter race, he finished the semifinals in 21.18 seconds. He also ran in the Indian 4 x 100-meter relay, but the time of 40.73 seconds wasn’t enough to qualify for the final round.

During the 7th International Sprint & Relay Cup at Atatürk University Stadium in Turkey, Ajmal achieved third place with a time of 46.04 seconds. In 2021, he won the gold medal at the Inter-Services Championship with a time of 46.91 seconds. His strong performance continued into 2022 when he secured gold at the Indian Grand Prix, finishing the race in 46.78 seconds.

In 2022, he took part in the World Championships in Eugene, competing in the preliminary round of the 4 x 400-meter relay. He finished with a time of 3:07.29 minutes, but couldn’t go further. In 2022, he achieved the title of Indian champion in both the 4×400 meter relay and the mixed relay. Later that year, at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, he competed again in the 4 x 400-meter relay and finished in sixth place with a time of 3:05.51 minutes.

In 2023, he competed in the Asian Championships in Bangkok. In the 400 meters, he finished fourth with a time of 45.36 seconds. Additionally, he and his team, which included Amoj Jacob, Mijo Chacko Kurian, and Rajesh Ramesh, secured the silver medal in the relay with a time of 3:01.80 seconds. They finished second, just behind the Sri Lankan team. Muhammed Ajmal and his team including Muhammed Anas, Amoj Jacob, and Rajesh Ramesh, ran super fast, finishing a 4 x 400-meter relay race in 2 minutes and 59.92 seconds during the World Athletics Championships in Budapest on August 27, 2023. Because of this amazing time, they made it to the World Athletics Championship Finals. At the World Athletics Championships 23, Ajmal and his entire team secured position 5 in the finals.
