Harsmeep Singh Gurcharan Singh Kang ^[1]Startupwala Private Limited aka Smeep Kang was born on Tuesday, 30 January 1973 (age 50 years; as of 2023) in Patiala, Punjab, India. His zodiac sign is Aquarius. He completed his schooling at Yadavindra Public School, Patiala. He played cricket and was a member of the Punjab Under-16 team in the Vijay Merchant Trophy in 1991 and won the National Championship in Cuttack, Odisha. He pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Technology in Chemical Engineering at Punjab University, Chandigarh from 1994 to 1998. While studying in college, he started working in films; however, after completing college, he moved to Mumbai and became a marketing professional to achieve financial security. He kept working in the film and TV industry, and when he realised that he was earning more from acting than his marketing job, he became a full-time actor.

In the early 2000s, he worked in many Punjabi TV shows including Lori, Kaun Dillan Diyan Jaane, Nasihat, and Sarhad.

Pollywood/Punjabi

He made his debut as an actor with the 1999 film Mahaul Theek Hai and played the role of Vicky.

He went to the audition for his debut film to only meet Jaspal Bhatti; however, manager Kuldeep Sharma liked his looks and asked for his photograph. Smeep gave his passport-size photograph, and he was eventually cast in the film and shot for the film from 1996 to 1998 while studying in college. He went on to act as Pal Jindal in the 2006 film Ek Jind Ek Jaan, as Smeep in the 2008 film Chak de Phatte, as Mr Bhullar in the 2018 film Carry On Jatta 2, as Producer in the film Naukar Vahuti Da and as Jeet in the film Band Vaaje, both in 2019.

He made his debut in Bollywood with the 2007 film Kaafila and played the role of Makhan Singh. He also acted as Smeep Kang in the 2008 film 26th July at Barista.

He made his debut as a director and producer with the 2007 direct-to-video film Meri Vahuti Da Viyah. His first film as a writer was the 2008 film Chak de Phatte.

His big break as a director was in 2012 with the film Carry On Jatta which was the highest-grossing Punjabi film of that year. He later wrote, produced, and directed the 2013 film Lucky Di Unlucky Story. He later directed the 2016 film Vaisakhi List, the 2018 film Laavan Phere, and Carry on Jatta 2 and 3 as well.

In 2022, he made his debut web series Ki Banu Punia Da as a director.

Bollywood/Hindi

His maiden film as a writer and director in Bollywood was the 2015 film Second Hand Husband; this film was the debut film of Tina Ahuja, daughter of popular Indian actor Govinda, and Bollywood debut film of popular Punjabi actor-singer Gippy Grewal.

He later directed the 2019 film Jhootha Kahin Ka which featured Rishi Kapoor and Jimmy Sheirgill in the lead roles.

Facts/Trivia

• Smeep Kang revealed during the trailer launch of Carry on Jatta 3 film that he once set up a vada pav shop near the Jogeshwari station in Mumbai as his career was not doing well. The name of his shop was Choti Bites. Upon hearing this, popular Indian actor Aamir Khan, who was present during the trailer launch, saluted Kang’s courage and dedication to his work.

• Popular Punjabi singer-actor Gippy Grewal revealed the start of Kang’s first major hit film Carry On Jatta. Grewal said that he once went to watch Kang’s Chak De Phatte film; however, the theatre was empty, and he had to convince his friends to watch at least the first 10 minutes. Grewal and his friends liked the film and watched the complete film. When he tried to reach Kang, Kang had changed his number; however, he somehow got hold of him and worked in Carry on Jatta film which went on to become highest grossing Punjabi film of that year.

• In June 2023, he appeared on an episode of The Kapil Sharma Show to promote his film Carry on Jatta 3.

• His film Carry On Jatta has been remade in Odia, Telugu, Bangladeshi, and Bengali languages.

• On 13 August 1993, he filed a case in Punjab & Haryana High Court against Punjab University’s decision to disallow him from studying Chemical Engineering. Kang had appeared for the Common Entrance Exam under the sports quota and secured 53.5 marks. He cleared the interview; however, when the time for the trial came, Sports Director did not take his trial and directly disallowed him. • He suffered from depression for two years from 2009 to 2010.

• Noted Punjabi comedian Gurpreet Ghuggi described Smeep Kang as very passionate about his work. When Kang wrote the script for Carry On Jatta film, Gippy Grewal wanted to purchase the script; however, Ghuggi talked to Kang that he should not sell the script and direct the film, and Ghuggi convinced Grewal to act in the film instead of purchasing the script and make a film with any other director.
