Parvathy Thiruvothu was born on Thursday, 7 April 1988 (age 35 years; as of 2023) in Calicut, Kerala. She dropped her schooling midway in Calicut and moved to Thiruvananthapuram, where she completed her schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pangode. She pursued B.A. in English Literature at All Saints College, Thiruvananthapuram.

Film

Parvathy Thiruvothu made her debut in acting as a supporting actor with the Malayalam film “Out of Syllabus” in 2006.

In her second Malayalam film, “Notebook,” directed by Rosshan Andrrews, she appeared as one of the three main leads of the film.

In 2007, she appeared in a comedy-drama film “Vinodaythra” as a supporting actor. Parvathy Thiruvothu appeared as a leading actress in the Kannada film “Milana,” opposite Puneeth Rajkumar. The film proved to be a super hit and ran for 500 days at a multiplex in Bangalore.

In 2008, she played the role of Maari, a labourer in her village’s fireworks company, in the Tamil film “Poo.” In an interview, she revealed that to play the role of Maari, she visited a firework factory to grasp the character. She also revealed that for “Poo,” she rejected almost 12 films.

In 2009, Parvathy Thiruvothu acted and dubbed the role in her own voice in the Kannada film “Male Barali Manju Irali” (2009). In 2013, she was seen opposite the famous Indian actor Dhanush in the Tamil language film “Maryan.” Her performance as RJ Sarah in the Malayalam film “Bangalore Days” (2014) received a huge acclamation from the audience.

In 2015, she appeared in the biographical Malayalam language romantic drama film “Ennu Ninte Moideen,” based on the tragic love story of Kanchanamala and Moideen, a couple from northern Kerala. She received various awards for her performance in the film. In 2016, she replayed the role of RJ Sarah in the Tamil remake of the Malayalam film “Bangalore Days” titled “Bangalore Naatkal.” Her performance in the film “Take Off” (2017) was well received by the audience, and the film ran for over 125 days in theatres. The film was screened at the International Film Festival of India and the International Film Festival of Kerala.

In 2017, Parvathy Thiruvothu made her Bollywood debut with the film “Qarib Qarib Singlle” opposite Irrfan Khan.

In the Malayalam film “Uyare,” she played the character of an acid attack survivor and received many awards for her performance in the film.

In 2022, she appeared in the character of a pregnant woman in the film “Wonder Women” starring Nadiya Moidu. The film was released on 18 November 2022 on SonyLIV.

Television

Parvathy Thiruvothu anchored the music show “Tamil Hits” on Kiran TV. She also played a significant role in the TV serial Pavithrabandham.

In 2021, Parvathy Thiruvothu appeared in the Tamil-language web series “Navarasa” in which she played the role of Waheeda Begum.

Controversy

Trolled for commenting on Mammootty’s film

At the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) in 2017, Parvathy Thiruvothu spoke out on the misogynic dialogues used in Malayalam films while citing the example of the popular Malayalam actor Mammootty’s film “Kasaba.” She said,

With all respect to the makers, the film disappointed me, as it featured a great actor uttering misogynistic dialogues. A lot of people feel and believe that cinema reflects life and the society. When a superstar utters such a dialogue, people obviously tend to think that it is cool to make sexist remarks.” ^[1]The Week

Later, she was heavily trolled and received vicious and abusive comments on social media from Mammootty’s fans.

• Parvathy Thiruvothu is a trained Bharatanatyam dancer.

• Parvathy Thiruvothu had been a victim of child abuse, eve-teasing, and stalking. She revealed this at a function at St. Theresa’s College and said,

• She used to follow a non-vegetarian diet earlier but turned vegetarian after she met Joan MacArthur (a photojournalist) in Finland during the making of her film “Ennu Ninte Moideen” in 2015. She also stopped using dairy and leather products.

• The actress was trolled and abused on social media for adding the surname “Menon” to her name to support casteism. In response to this, she shared a Facebook post on 23 December 2015 in which she clarified that she never had a surname in any of her official documents, and the surname “Menon” is added to her name by a media journalist mistakenly. She revealed that she had a surname only on her birth certificate, which holds the name “Parvathy Thiruvothu Kottuvatta” (Thiruvothu Kottuvatta being the title of her maternal family house). During her schooling, she lost that surname because of some transfer certificate errors, and, as a consequence of it, her 10th standard certificate, her driving license, her voter card, and her passport hold the name “Parvathy.”

• Parvathy Thiruvothu together with other women actors, directors, and technicians from the Malayalam film industry formed the organization “Women in Cinema Collective” for the welfare of women workers in the Malayalam film industry. The organization was formed in May 2017 to resist gender parity.

• The actress is known for making her opinions public. She often raises her voice against using misogynistic language and showcasing masculine power in Malayalam films. At the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in 2019, she pointed out the film “Arjun Reddy” and “Kabir Singh” for exhibiting masculine power in it.
