Indira Jaising is one of the most celebrated Indian lawyers of the country who was born on 3 June 1940 (age 80 years; as in 2020) in Mumbai, Maharashtra. She was born in a Sindhi Hindu family and spent her childhood in Mumbai. Her zodiac sign is Gemini. She pursued a bachelor’s degree in Arts from Bangalore University, and then she pursued LLM from the University of Bombay in the year 1962. After the completion of her LLM, she started her law practice. She was inclined towards fighting for human rights and continues to do so even now.

Indira Jaising was born in a Sindhi Hindu family in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Indira Jaising grew up in Mumbai and completed her education to become a lawyer. She got married to Anand Grover, a senior lawyer working in the field of Indian law regarding homosexuality and HIV. Career

One of the most renowned lawyers of the Indian judicial system, Indira Jaising is an active participant in raising matters and questions on issues like human rights and gender equality. She has worked on many high-profile cases, and one such case is of Rupan Deol Bajaj, an IPS officer who professed that former DGP of Punjab, late KPS Gill, had molested her at a party in 1988. The case went on till 2005 where KPS Gill was asked to pay a fine of Rs. 200,000 and serve 3 years of probation. She is devoted to working for the welfare of women and another case that she took was Mary Roy’s case. The final verdict in this case gave the Syrian Christian women in Kerala the right to equal inheritance. She challenged the Indian Divorce Act in the High Court of Kerala as the provisions in the act were not beneficial for women.

Indira Jaising represented the Bhopal Gas tragedy victims in the Supreme Court of India who claimed compensation from the American multinational Union Carbide Corporation. She was also associated with Peoples Commission on Violence in Punjab to look into the matter of judicial killings, disappearances, and mass cremations that took place from 1979 to 1990. In 2015, she represented Priya Pillai in the Green Peace India case, and in 2016, she raised concerns about the procedure that is followed for the designation of senior advocates in the Supreme Court. Indira Jaising is part of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, London, and she was a visiting scholar at Columbia University, New York.

Controversies

  • In 2019, CBI raided the houses and offices of Indian senior lawyers, Indira Jaising and Anand Grover in connection with a case. The case was filed stating that the NGO, Lawyers Collective, violated some foreign donation norms. The case was registered in 2016 stating that the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) was being violated, and the donations sent to the NGO were used for ‘political purposes.’ The FCRA license of the NGO was cancelled by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. However, the government decided to unfreeze their accounts, but the license was not renewed. [2]India Today
  • In January 2020, Indira Jaising gave a controversial statement saying that Asha Devi, the mother of 2012 Delhi gang-rape victim should forgive the culprits. This matter was in the limelight and Nirbhaya’s mother slammed Indira Jaising for giving such a statement when she is a senior lawyer who is actively involved in the fight for women’s rights.
