He has held the command of various paramilitary forces such as the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). Career
After completing his police training at SVPNPA on 21 August 1989, Anish Dayal Singh was allotted the Manipur cadre. He went on to hold various important appointments in the Manipur Police.
Anish joined the Manipur cadre at a time when insurgency was at its highest in the North-Eastern parts of India. After getting promoted to the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Anish was sent to New Delhi on central deputation. There, he was appointed as the joint director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB); he went on to become the special director at IB. He became the Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) on 4 October 2023. He was simultaneously given the additional charge as the DG of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
He took over the command of ITBP when the relations between India and China were at their lowest and tension was mounting up on the border, referred to as the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The official press release of the Government of India read,
The undersigned is directed to convey approval of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet for appointment of Shri Anish Dayal Singh, IPS (MA:88), presently working as Special Director, Intelligence Bureau (IB), to the post of Director General, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).”
In November 2023, he was handed the additional responsibility of heading the CRPF after S. L. Thaosen retired from the service. Anish is set to retire from service on 31 December 2024.

- Anish Dayal Singh has won the PSDM medal twice. The second medal was awarded to him in 1997.
- He has been awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service (PMMS) twice; the second medal was given to him in 2004.
