- On 15 August 2016, Ajay Bhatnagar earned the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service (PPMDS) for his exceptional contributions to the Jharkhand police force.

- In January 2010, Ajay’s wife, Vandana, filed a police complaint for pickpocketing. According to the police, the wife of a high-ranking CISF official, Ajay Bhatnagar, was targeted by pickpockets in the capital city. The incident occurred at Select City Mall in Saket, South Delhi, while the couple was shopping. A police official said in a media talk that when Vandana and her husband approached a shop, they noticed that her purse was open. This made them feel uneasy, so they decided to investigate. Soon, they discovered that her credit card and cash were missing. The official said,
The couple had gone to the mall on Sunday. Vandana had her credit card and Rs 5,500 picked from her purse during shopping.”
- On 24 January 2018, Ajay Bhatnagar was given the role of Joint Director in the CBI. In January 2020, he was promoted to the position of Additional Director within the agency.
