Ajay Bhatnagar is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1989 batch of the Jharkhand cadre. On 28 June 2023,  he was appointed as the Special Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) until his retirement on 20 November 2024.

In addition to his service in the Jharkhand Police, Ajay Bhatnagar has also worked with the CRPF, NPA, and CISF.

  • In January 2010, Ajay’s wife, Vandana, filed a police complaint for pickpocketing. According to the police, the wife of a high-ranking CISF official, Ajay Bhatnagar, was targeted by pickpockets in the capital city. The incident occurred at Select City Mall in Saket, South Delhi, while the couple was shopping. A police official said in a media talk that when Vandana and her husband approached a shop, they noticed that her purse was open. This made them feel uneasy, so they decided to investigate. Soon, they discovered that her credit card and cash were missing. The official said,

    The couple had gone to the mall on Sunday. Vandana had her credit card and Rs 5,500 picked from her purse during shopping.”

  • On 24 January 2018, Ajay Bhatnagar was given the role of Joint Director in the CBI. In January 2020, he was promoted to the position of Additional Director within the agency.
