Arrested in Drug Trafficking Case
In April 2023, Chrisann was arrested by UAE Police in a drug trafficking case at Sharjah International Airport, UAE. Reportedly, she was working as a drug peddler for an international drug racket which was run by the Indian absconding gangster Ravi Rattesar. Soon after her arrest, she was taken to the Sharjah Central Jail and Indian Consulate was informed about the arrest. The Times of India In an interview, while talking about her arrest, her brother Kevin said that Chrisann was a victim of drug trafficking. Her family further shared that Chrisann was scammed by a man named Ravi. Ravi first texted Chrisann’s mother that his talent agency wanted to cast Chrisann in an international web series. In an interview, while talking about the scam, her mother said,
After a series of meetings, an audition was locked for Chrisann in Dubai and the man took care of all the arrangements. Before Chrisann took her flight on April 1, she was called by the accused to meet at a coffee shop 10 minutes away from the Mumbai international airport. He handed over a trophy to her, perhaps mentioning that the said trophy is part of the script for the audition and will be required for the audition. Accordingly, she carried the trophy with her.”
Her mother further shared that when Chrisann reached Sharjah Airport, she tried contacting Ravi, but he did not pick the phone. In an interview, while talking about Chrisann’s arrest, her brother said,
We have already hired a local lawyer in Dubai which is going to cost us Rs 13 lakh. We still don’t know the official charges and if there are any fines. My family is preparing to mortgage our house since we read the fines could be anywhere between Rs. 20-40 lakhs. It’s been more than 13 days and we haven’t been able to sleep, eat or rest worried sick about her while the fraudsters are roaming free.”
She was released from Sharjah jail on 27 April 2023. In the drug-smuggling case, the actress was allegedly framed by a baker named Anthony Paul and his associate Rajesh Babhote alias Ravi. A metropolitan magistrate court in Mumbai remanded Anthony Paul and his associate Rajesh Babhote alias Ravi to police custody on 27 April 2023. Apart from Chrisann Pereira, they also framed four others into becoming drug mules. Police alleged that Anthony Paul planted marijuana and opium in parcels given to the five people, including the actor, to settle personal scores. Anthony Paul allegedly sent Chrisann to Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE) for an audition, and she was given a trophy filled with ganja (marijuana); she was told it was part of the audition prop. During the Covid-19 lockdown, the police reported that Chrisann’s mother’s pet dog barked at Anthony Paul and tried to bite him due to which he became angry and tried to beat the dog with a chair, which Premila didn’t like and insulted him in front of others following which Paul decided to teach them a lesson, and he later framed the actor in the drug-smuggling case.
