Politics

In 1990, former BJP leader and Union Minister H. N. Ananth Kumar noticed Yatnal and promoted him to the party leadership; many reports suggested that Yatnal was a staunch supporter of Ananth Kumar and often criticised B. S. Yediyurappa and his loyalists on different occasions. Yatnal was denied a BJP ticket to contest in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, and some reports suggested that he was not happy with the party’s list of candidates and he publicly criticised and questioned the decision of the party.

Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA)

In 1994, he successfully contested his first legislative assembly election on a ticket of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the Bijapur assembly constituency in Karnataka; Yatnal defeated Habib Usman Patel of the Janata Dal (JD) by a margin of 16128 votes. Basangouda emerged victorious from the Devar Hippargi assembly constituency in Karnataka on a ticket of the BJP in 2008; he defeated A. S. Patil of the Indian National Congress by a margin of 30893 votes.

In 2013, he unsuccessfully contested as a Janata Dal (Secular) candidate from the Bijapur City constituency in the 2013 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election. Basangouda was given a ticket by the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2018 to contest the legislative assembly election; he contested from the Bijapur City assembly constituency in Karnataka and emerged victorious against the INC candidate Abdul Hameed Mushrif by a margin of 6413 votes. In April 2023, he was fielded by the BJP from the Bijapur City assembly constituency.

Member of Legislative Council (MLC)

In 2016, he became the MLC of the Bijapur Local Authorities. He served as a Member of the Karnataka Legislative Council between 6 January 2016 and 15 May 2018.

Member of Parliament (MP) Lok Sabha

After he completed his first stint as the MLA of the Bijapur constituency, Basangouda was given a ticket by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1999 to contest the Lok Sabha elections; he contested from the Bijapur Lok Sabha constituency in Karnataka and emerged victorious against the INC candidate Gudadinni Laxmibai Basagondappa by a margin of 36639 votes. In 1999, he was named to the Parliament Committee on Industry; he was a member of the committee between 1999 and 2002. Basangouda served as a member of the Parliament Committee on Private Members’ Bills and Resolutions from 1999 to 2002.

In 2000, he was named to the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Human Resources Development; he was part of the committee between 2000 and 2002. On 1 July 2002, Basangouda Patil Yatnal was appointed as the Union Minister of State, Ministry of Textiles in the BJP ministry; he served as the Minister of State for Textiles between 1 July 2002 and 8 September 2003. He was appointed as the Union Minister of State, Ministry of Railways in the BJP ministry on 8 September 2003; he was part of the third Vajpayee ministry between 8 September 2003 and 22 May 2004. Basangouda Patil Yatnal emerged victorious in the 2004 Lok Sabha election against Somanagouda Basanagouda Patil (Managuli) of INC and retained the Bijapur Lok Sabha constituency.

First expulsion from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)

In 2009, the BJP leader was denied a party ticket from the Bijapur Lok Sabha constituency. After the list of the BJP candidates for the 2009 Lok Sabha elections was published, massive protests were organized by Yatnal and his followers against the BJP state leadership and namely against B. S. Yediyurappa. In March 2009, the “BJP ulisi, karyakartharannu rakshisi” (Save BJP, Save Party) campaign was launched by Basangouda at Puttur City in Karnataka; Puttur was the hometown of the then BJP State President D. V. Sadananda Gowda. In an interview, he revealed that the party was sidelining senior members and newcomers were given Vidhan Sabha seats and the Rajya Sabha seats. The party was put in a tough spot after the dissident activities by him and his supporters and how he openly criticised the then Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa’s style of functioning. The BJP’s high command expelled him and his followers from the party in May 2009.

Joined Janata Dal (Secular) JDS

In January 2010, he joined the Janata Dal (Secular). In 2013, Basangouda Patil Yatnal was fielded by the Janata Dal (Secular) from the Bijapur City constituency; however, he was defeated by INC’s Makbul S Bagawan. Later he became the state general secretary of the JDS in Karnataka. Basangouda publicly welcomed the BJP’s decision to anoint Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections while Yatnal was still a JDS member. On 3 October 2013, he resigned from his party membership and tendered his resignation as the state general secretary. Some reports suggested that he quit the party after he was denied the post of JD(S) state president.

Rejoined BJP and was expelled for the second time

After he left JDS, Yatnal rejoined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2013. Yatnal was expelled from the party for a second time in December 2015 after he refused to withdraw his nomination as a rebel candidate from the Vijayapura constituency for the legislative council elections. In a press statement issued by the BJP state leadership, the actions of the politician were labelled as anti-party, and they criticised him for indiscipline. Some reports suggested that he was expelled from the party for six years.

Reinducted to the BJP in 2018

Ahead of the 2018 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election, the BJP leadership inducted him back into the party along with Congress MLA A. S. Patil; however, many leaders were not happy with the decision of the party leadership, and massive protests were held outside the party office in Vijayapura against the induction of the two politicians. On 5 April 2018, a long-term loyalist of the then-BJP state president B. S. Yediyurappa, Rajugouda Patil, along with 400 of his followers, tendered their resignation and announced that they were joining the Janata Dal (Secular). According to some reports, Rajugouda alleged that Yediyurappa did not consult with any of the local leaders before bringing back Yatnal or inducting A. S. Patil into the party.

In July 2018, while addressing a gathering as part of the Kargil Vijay Diwas, he made some contentious comments against the intellectuals. According to some reports, Basangouda claimed that if he were the Home Minister, he would have ordered the police to shoot all the intellectuals. He labelled the liberals and intellectuals as anti-nationalists.

He added that the country faced more danger from the intellectuals and secularists and they speak against the army personnel while they live off the tax money. He also blamed the former Indian prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru for the conflicts in Kashmir and claimed that Narendra Modi would revoke Article 370 which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir. ^[5]The Wire

Remarks against Muslim Voters and Tipu Sultan

In 2018, some reports suggested that he allegedly instructed the corporators to work only for Hindus who voted for him and not Muslims in the Bijapur assembly constituency in Karnataka. A video of him addressing a speech went viral on social media in which he reportedly said that he instructed his people to not let anyone wear a ‘topi’ or ‘burka’ should not be allowed to be near him or at his office. ^[6]The Hindu In an interview, he said that he asked the Muslims not to vote for him and that he was trying to protect the Hindus who were in trouble and if the Muslims needed help they could visit the government offices.

While addressing his supporters during a rally in February 2023, he allegedly compared Muslims to Tipu Sultan and warned his supporters that none of them would let the followers of Tipu Sultan (Muslims) win from the Bijapur assembly constituency and only the descendants of Shivaji Maharaj should win and allegedly told his supporters none of them should vote for the Muslims even by mistake. ^[7]Hindustan Times

Show cause notice for questioning higher authorities

In October 2019, Basangouda criticised the delay in allocating the central flood aid during the 2019 Karnataka floods and criticised Narendra Modi through a tweet. The BJP leader was enraged after Modi tweeted about the floods in Bihar and not Karnataka. In an interview, he pointed out that the people of the state will be offended that the PM did not tweet about them and was only focused on the Bihar floods, coincidentally when the elections were approaching; Basangouda added that if the central government continued their lack of concern on the issue, the people will turn against the party. Later, he berated the 25 BJP MPs who were part of the 17th Lok Sabha and accused them of not being vigilant enough to help the state in their need of the hour.

In an interview, he criticised the MPs and singled out the then Bangalore South Lok Sabha constituency MP Tejasvi Surya and said that it was the works of leaders like himself who interacted with the common people that build the party in South India and not youngsters like Surya; Yatnal said that speaking English and sitting in an air-conditioned room won’t make one a leader and help the party. On 4 October 2019, the BJP central leadership demanded an explanation from him and issued a show-cause notice from the leader. Some reports suggested that the party leadership observed his actions were against the party and alleged that he spread lies about the party leadership. Furthermore, the leadership accused his outbursts belittled the efforts of the central government and the BJP MPs from the state. While speaking about the party decision, in an interview, he pointed out that his actions were not against the party and denied the accusations that he rebelled against the government. Later, he pointed out that he would meet with the PM to brief him about the seriousness of the issue.

Ridiculed a freedom fighter

In 2020, the politician lambasted the freedom fighter H. S. Doreswamy for his criticism of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the BJP leaders. In an interview, while Basangouda was speaking about H. S. Doreswamy’s involvement with the rallies against the CAA bill, the politician labelled the freedom fighter as a “fake freedom fighter’’ and alleged that he was an agent of Pakistan.

These comments were heavily criticised by the INC MLAs and they disrupted the legislative assembly proceedings on 2 March 2020 and staged a protest in the Well of the House. The INC MLAs pointed out that the remarks made by the BJP leader were an insult to the Indian freedom struggle and demanded an apology from the BJP leader and forced the Speaker to discuss the derogatory remarks made by the ruling party’s MLA. War of words against B. S. Yediyurappa and B. Y. Vijayendra

In an interview, Yatnal said that the former Karnataka chief minister and his son, B. Y. Vijayendra, tried to divide the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community for their political gain. In February 2021, the politician allegedly told the reporters that B. S. Yediyurappa purposefully delayed granting the Other Backward Class (OBC) status to the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community. ^[9]The News Minute

In July 2021, he lambasted B. S. Yediyurappa and his son for Vijayendra’s remark about his father completing the term as the chief minister of the state. In an interview, Basangouda pointed out the examples of Adil Shah, Tipu Sultan, and the Mughals and criticised that no one can say that they will remain in power forever and went on to attack Yediyurappa by referring to a Chief Minister’s prison stay in 2011; he further alleged that it was Yediyurappa who made his son speak for him.

Following his continued verbal attacks against B. S. Yediyurappa and B. Y. Vijayendra, in January 2023, the BJP high command warned Yatnal not to speak badly about B. S. Yediyurappa ahead of the 2023 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election. While speaking about the high command’s decision, he told the reporters that although he would stay silent, it was not a compromise and pointed out that the differences between him and the former chief minister were never personal but political. ^[10]The Indian Express

Karnataka CM’s post for ₹2,500 crores

In May 2022, while he was addressing a rally, Yatnal revealed that some power brokers from Delhi offered to make him the chief minister of the state if he would pay Rs. 2500 crores. He added that many people paid Rs. 50 crores to Rs. 100 crores to be made a minister in the state, he then warned his followers that there were a lot of fraudsters in politics and that people should not fall for their gimmicks. In an interview, the then-president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), D. K. Shivakumar, said that the INC would raise the issue in front of the ACB (anti-corruption bureau) and demanded a probe into Yatnal’s claims. ^[11]The Hindu

Jibe at Karnataka BJP Ministers and CM

In 2021, while addressing a press meeting, Basangouda said that then Karnataka Minister for Mines and Geology, Murugesh Nirani, and some others became ministers by blackmailing the then Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa. He added that Nirani had some CDs and used them to pressurize Yediyurappa to include him in the cabinet. Responding to Yatnal’s allegations in an interview, Nirani said that Basangouda was among the useless people and nothing good came from them and added that Yatnal should stop his criticism of the party members if he wanted to remain a BJP member. ^[12]The Hindu

Nirani pointed out that Yatnal was elected as an MLA because of the works of Yediyurappa and the BJP. He challenged Yatnal to prove his worth by resigning from the assembly and trying his luck by contesting in the legislative assembly election. The war of words between them intensified after Nirani did not back the Panchamasali quota agitation back in February 2021. In January 2023, while addressing a Panchamasali-Lingayat protest rally for OBC reservation at Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai‘s assembly constituency, Basangouda heavily criticised both Nirani and Bommai. ^[13]The Indian Express While speaking about Nirani during the gathering he said,

In January 2023, the BJP central disciplinary committee served Yatnal with a show-cause notice for his derogatory remarks against fellow party members and ministers of the party in a public forum after the CM and ministers met with the party’s high command and expressed their displeasure about the way he insulted the BJP ministers; the committee demanded a reply from Yatnal within a week. ^[18]Deccan Herald ^[19]Deccan Herald Some reports suggested that even though the MLA was served with disciplinary actions in the past for his attacks on former Chief Minister B. In May 2023, while addressing a rally as part of the 2023 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election campaign, Yatnal allegedly said that if the BJP government was voted to power in Karnataka they would implement Yogi Adityanath‘s style of governance in the state. The politician reportedly said that, if anyone spoke against India, they would be encountered and the BJP would stop sending them to jail and a decision would be taken on the road; some reports suggested that he was referring to the murder of the gangster-turned-Uttar Pradesh politician Atiq Ahmed.

Controversial Remark on Sonia Gandhi

On 28 April 2023, while addressing a rally at Yelburga of Koppal district in Karnataka, Basangouda landed in trouble for his reply to Mallikarjun Kharge, who associated Narendra Modi with a venomous snake. ^[20]The News Minute Yatnal criticised Kharge for not respecting the Prime Minister and said,

If Modi is a poisonous snake, then Sonia Gandhi must be vishkanya? (venomous maiden)”

He continued attacking Gandhi during his speech and accused her of destroying the nation, and alleged that she worked as an agent for China and Pakistan. His comments were not received well among the Congress leaders and members and they demanded the BJP leadership to expel him from the party.

While speaking to the reporters about the incident on 28 April 2023, congress general secretary, Randeep Surjewala, commented that the BJP and its leaders in the state have lost their mental and political balance. ^[21]The Week He added that the BJP leaders have made it a habit to insult the Gandhi family and pointed out that such comments revealed the vile and unbecoming nature of the ruling party and its leaders. One day later, in an interview, Sachin Pilot condemned the comments made by the BJP leader and pointed out that the use of such language in politics was unfortunate. On 3 May 2023, the Election Commission of India issued a notice to Yatnal for his remarks against Sonia; the notice said that the BJP leader was found to have violated the provisions of the model code in Karnataka and demanded an explanation from him within a day.

• In 2022, following the allegations that Siddaramaiah went to a temple after having non-vegetarian food, ^[26]The Economic Times Basangouda challenged the congress leader and said,
  

  If you (Siddaramaiah) have guts, eat pork and visit a mosque.”

• In March 2022, he announced that he would cover the cost of one show for a week of the Hindi film ‘The Kashmir Files’ directed by Vivek Agnihotri. In an interview, he said that the film showed the atrocities which were done to the Kashmiri pandits and Hindus. He added that the people of his constituency needed to watch the film so that they would not forget what happened in Kashmir and that the film would help raise awareness against such incidents and avoid the repetition of any such happenings in the future.

• In an interview, he said that he was an eligible leader to be the Chief Minister of Karnataka and pointed out that if the BJP made him the CM candidate they would get 150 seats in the 2023 legislative assembly elections. ^[27]NDTV

• On 25 July 2022, during a meeting as part of the quarterly Karnataka Development Program (KDP), the then Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer, Rahul Shinde, claimed that there was a lack of gynaecologists to work at the taluk hospitals. While responding to the claims of the CEO, Yatnal pointed out that he did observe the long ques of pregnant women at the hospitals and then the BJP leader reportedly asked the district surgeon to prioritize treating pregnant women who have less than three children over treating pregnant women who have more than three children to control the population growth. ^[28]News Karnataka

• On 12 April 2023, in an interview, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Appasaheb Pattanashetty pointed out that Basangouda Patil Yatnal was given a ticket by the BJP in 2023 to contest the legislative assembly election from the Bijapur City assembly constituency after Yatnal blackmailed some of the state leaders. Earlier in 2019, Appasaheb Pattanashetty labelled Basangouda as a hypocrite and an opportunistic politician.
