Gaurav Bhatia

Gaurav Bhatia is an Indian advocate at the Supreme Court of India and the National Spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party. On 13 July 2022, he hit the headlines after he accused former Indian vice-president Hamid Ansari of inviting a Pakistani delegate, who leaked some confidential Indian information to Pakistan’s spy agency ISI, to India during the tenure of the UPA government in India.

Career

The state government of Uttar Pradesh appointed Gaurav Bhatia as an additional advocate general (AGG) of the state in 2012. Thereafter, he was appointed as the National Spokesperson and the National President of the Samajwadi Party’s Legal Wing. He was terminated from the position of AGG by the state government in 2016. From 2015 to 2017, he served as the Secretary of the Bar Association of the Supreme Court of India. Thereafter, he worked as an Advocate-on-Record of the Supreme Court of India, and later, he was designated as the Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court. On 5 February 2017, he resigned from the Samajwadi Party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party as its National Spokesperson on 2 April 2017. In one of his media conversations, he talked about the reason for leaving the Samajwadi Party and said that the interests of the legal community in Uttar Pradesh had not been guarded under the governance of the Samajwadi Party.

Derogatory Remarks Against Reena Gupta

In September 2023, an Indian politician and lawyer named Reena Gupta accused Gaurav Bhatia of making derogatory remarks about her during a debate show on television. While talking about this, in an interview, Reena said that she had visited the Nizamuddin Police Station to file a complaint against Gaurav; however, the police officials declined to register her complaint.

  • Several Indian national news channels frequently invite Gaurav Bhatia to their political debate shows as a national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party. On one such debate held in November 2018 on news channel India TV, Gaurav Bhatia stated to his co-panellist and Congress spokesperson Ragini Nayak that he had the right to call Indian National Congress president, Rahul Gandhi, a peon if Ragini had the right to call Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, a thief.     if she called PM Modi a “chor (thief)”, he reserved the right to call Rahul Gandhi a “chaprasi”. Rahul Gandhi a “khandani chor”, and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra “the mother of future Congress presidents.”

In the declaration, Gaurav Bhatia affirmed that Nusrat Mirza visited India five times during the UPA rule and passed some sensitive information collected from India to ISI, a Pakistani spy agency. Bhatia mentioned,

    Mirza’s purported comments that he had visited India on Ansari’s invitations and also met him, but the former vice president rejected the claims.”

    Soon after the allegations put by Gaurav Bhatia on national media, Hamid Ansari stated in a press meeting that the Government of India or the Ministry of External Affairs were responsible for all the invitations sent to the foreign delegates and he merely followed the instructions. He continued by saying that Nusrat Mirza was never invited by him to India. Hamid said,

    I had inaugurated the Conference on Terrorism, on December 11, 2010, the ‘International Conference of Jurists on International Terrorism and Human Rights’. As is the normal practice, the list of invitees would have been drawn by the organisers. I never invited him or met him.”
