Aditi Saigal, popularly known by her stage name DOT, is an Indian indie musician and actress. She gained popularity in 2017 when her song ‘Everybody Dances to Techno’ went viral on YouTube.

Aditi Saigal was born on Monday, 21 September 1998 (age 25 years; as of 2023), and she hails from Delhi, India. Her zodiac is Virgo.

Growing up, she developed a passion for music listening to her father, who was a rock musician. In an interview, while talking about the same, she said,

I remember waking up to music a lot. Sometimes it would be Frou Frou (Imogen Heap) or Diogal Sakho playing his Samba Alla. Dad would be playing his djembe along as I tumbled out of my bedroom. I also remember singing to this one cassette that used to be in my nani’s car called Dances from Around the World.”

After her parents divorced in 2006. she was brought up by her paternal grandparents, Ashok Kumar Saigal and Madhu Saigal. She did her primary schooling at Mirambika – Free Progress School in New Delhi. She attended Woodstock School in Mussoorie (2014-2016). Then, she moved to the UK to study music. Aditi Saigal’s father, Amit Saigal, was an Indian rock musician and founder of Rock Street Journal (RSJ), the first rock magazine in India. He was fondly called “Papa Rock” in the music community. He died in Goa after drowning in the sea on 5 January 2012. ^[3]The Hindustan Times Her mother, Shena Gamat, is a Delhi-based theatre artist and actor. She has also appeared in the Bollywood film Band Baaja Baraat (2010) as wedding planner Chanda Narang. She is also a co-founder of the Barefoot Theatre Company. She is the only child of her parents. Amit and Shena mutually divorced in 2006. In 2015, Shena got married to Ashish Paliwal, a theatre artist and actor.

Career

In 2016, she worked as an assistant audition manager at the Barefoot Theatre Company in New Delhi, which was co-founded by her mother. Thereafter, she moved to Bangor, Wales, UK. From December 2017 to February 2018, she worked as a sales assistant at Accessorize in Bangor. She was a paid intern at the International Education Centre (IEC) at Bangor University from August 2018 to June 2019. For two months in 2019, she was a teaching intern at Dankook University, Cheonan, South Korea. In the same year, she worked as an Administrative Assistant and Database Designer for Eastwind Academy for Advanced Music & Performance in Gurgaon, India. In March 2020, she started freelancing as an online language teacher in Hengoed, Wales, UK.

Music

Aditi began her musical journey with a band called Blank in New Delhi, where she collaborated with musicians from One World College of Music. Talking about the same in an interview, she said,

It was interesting, it was with some of my friends: a singer and flautist and a bassist, guitarist. We all contributed with a bunch of songs, so it wasn’t just my songs. I think it was a bit more pop-oriented..”

In 2017, she started uploading raw recordings of her original compositions on her YouTube channel, Dot. She would sing short and simple songs while playing the piano. The first song she uploaded was ‘Reassure Me.’ On 28 February 2017, she became a YouTube sensation with her song ‘Everybody Dances to Techno.’

Thereafter, she uploaded various singles like Unwanted Opinions (2017), Normal Things (2017), Bet You Believe (2017), and  Sunny Days (2018) on her channel. In July 2021, she released her debut EP Khamotion, featuring songs such as Taxi Fare, This Train and Sultry Town (Ship’s Got No Sail).

Film

In 2023, she made her acting debut playing the role of Ethel Muggs in the Hindi musical comedy film The Archies.

• Her hobbies include cycling and sewing clothes.

• She received The School of Music Prize for Outstanding Overall Achievement in her second year (2018).

• In 2020, she became a recipient of the Phillip Pascall Memorial Prize for Outstanding Overall Achievement in the School of Music.

• The name “Dot.” was inspired by her mother, Shena. One day, when Aditi was 10, Shena explained the importance of dots to her while she was colouring in a colouring book. Shena started putting dots outside the lines and when Aditi asked why, Shena replied,

• In an interview, she revealed that slow fashion had a huge impact on her life. Slow fashion refers to the sustainable fashion movement that aims to reduce overconsumption and overproduction. • Zoya Akhtar first approached Aditi because she wanted to feature Aditi’s song ‘Assymetrical’ in The Archies (2023). At that time, Aditi was in the UK. While Zoya and Aditi were making a few changes to the song, Zoya asked Aditi if she wanted to act in the film. Eventually, Aditi auditioned and secured a role in the film.
