Yashasvi Jaiswal is an Indian allrounder who has played for Mumbai in domestic cricket and Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He is considered a hard-hitting opening batsman and has scored many hundreds in his cricketing journey.

Yashasvi Bhupendra Kumar Jaiswal was born on Friday, 28 December 2001 (age 21 years; as of 2022) in Suriyawan, Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, India. His zodiac sign is Capricorn. He was interested in cricket since childhood; however, he had no access to training facilities as he had a poor financial background. At the age of eleven in 2012, he moved to Mumbai to pursue his dreams of cricket. After moving to Mumbai, he met with his uncle Santosh who had a small house; however, his uncle was unable to accommodate him as he did not have any space at his home. His uncle helped him get a job at a dairy farm where he was allowed to sleep. Yashasvi studied at the Anjuman Islam Urdu High School, CST Mumbai during the day and played cricket during the afternoon, as a result, he was unable to work efficiently and was ultimately ousted from the dairy farm.

He later joined Muslim United Cricket Club in Azad Maidan, Mumbai where he used to sleep in the gardener’s tent. He started playing regular cricket at the Club and sold pani-puri and fruits in the evening. Although he did not like selling them, he sold them to make ends meet.

However, in an interview in August 2023, Jaiswal’s childhood coach, Jwala Singh, expressed his disappointment regarding Jaiswal’s narrative as a pani-puri seller. According to Jwala Singh, the viral video of Yashasvi Jaiswal selling pani-puri incorrectly claimed that the person standing beside him was his father, which was not true. Jwala Singh said,

So as per the visuals, media claims that the man next to him is his father, but Jaiswal’s father has come to Mumbai only for work purpose just a few times from 2013 to 2022. And during this period, Jaiswal has stayed with me and my family. We have never treated him like a student but instead as our own child and given all the facilities. So, watching these fake stories on him selling pani-puri does disappoint me because only a part of it is true. When these types of stories go viral, as a coach and a father-figure, it does hurt.”

While practising in the nets, he was noticed by the coach Jwala Singh one day who was impressed with his shots as he was playing seamlessly on a hard pitch where other cricketers were struggling. Jwala took him under his wings and provided him a place to stay following which his father made Jwala Singh his legal guardian. He took off on a cricket journey after that and never looked back.

His father’s name is Bhupendra Jaiswal, and his mother’s name is Kanchan Jaiswal. His father owns a small shop in Bhadohi, and his mother is a homemaker. He has two brothers named Tejaswi Jaiswal and Pradeep Jaiswal and a sister named Ekta Jaiswal. His brother Tejaswi also plays cricket and trains at Rajasthan Royals Academy.

Domestic

He made his debut in the Harris Shield Tournament for the Anjuman Islam Urdu High School, CST Mumbai in the 2012-13 season. During a match in the Giles Shield Tournament, he scored 319 runs and took 13 wickets for 99 runs against Raja Shivaji Vidyamandir which was registered in the Limca Book of Records as the best inter-school all-around performance.

Since he was low on confidence due to his struggle with his financial background, he was counselled by former Indian cricket legends, Dilip Vengsarkar and Wasim Jaffer, and Vengsarkar also trained him at his academy, Dilip Vengsarkar Foundation Academy.

He later played for Mumbai United Sports Club, Sachin Tendulkar XI, and Mumbai Police Sports Club in different tournaments. He played for Mumbai Under-16, Mumbai Under-19, Mumbai Under-23, and Mumbai teams in domestic cricket and emerged as a prolific allrounder and a run machine by scoring more than 50 centuries and taking more than 200 wickets. He made his debut in the Ranji Trophy on 7 January 2019 against Chhattisgarh. He became the youngest double centurion in List A cricket by scoring 203 runs off 154 balls against Jharkhand in the 2019-20 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He played for the West Zone, India A, and the Rest of India in the domestic circuit.

International

Under-19 & Under-23

In 2018, he was selected for India Under-19, and he helped the team win the 2018 Under-19 Asia Cup; he was the highest runscorer with 318 runs and won the Player of the Tournament award. He later played for India Under-19 A and India Under-19 Red in different tournaments. He played for India Under-19 in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup and scored 105 runs not out in the semi-final against Pakistan.

He also scored 88 runs in the final against Bangladesh; however, India lost the final and finished as runner-up. He scored 400 runs in the World Cup at an average of 133.33 and won the Player of the Tournament award. He later played for the India Under-23 team in international tournaments.

Test

On 12 July 2023, he made his Test debut against West Indies at Windsor Park; he scored 171 runs off 387 balls.

T20

On 8 August 2023, he made his T20I debut against West Indies at Providence Stadium; he scored 1 run off 2 balls.

Mumbai T20 League

In the maiden season of the Mumbai T20 League in 2018, he played for North Mumbai Panthers (NMP). In a match against Shivaji Park Lions, he scored 69 runs.

Indian Premier League (IPL)

In the 2020 IPL auction, he was acquired by Rajasthan Royals (RR) for Rs 2.4 crores against his base price of Rs 20 lakhs. He played his debut IPL match on 22 September 2020 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and scored 6 runs. On 2 October 2021, he made his maiden IPL fifty by scoring 50 runs off 21 balls against CSK at a strike rate of 238.10. RR retained him for Rs 4 crores before the 2022 IPL mega auction. On 30 April 2023, he scored his maiden IPL hundred by scoring 124 runs off 62 balls against Mumbai Indians (MI) at a strike rate of 200. On 11 May 2023, he scored 98 runs not out off 47 balls against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at a strike rate of 208.51 during which he completed his fifty in 13 balls. Many cricketers applauded his knock and took to Twitter to heap praise on him.

• On his Test debut against the West Indies on 12 July 2023, he became the 17th Indian batsman to score a century on his Test debut. This accomplishment puts him in the company of renowned players like Lala Amarnath, Gundappa Vishwanath, Sourav Ganguly, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, and other cricket legends. This remarkable feat also made him the first Indian opening batsman to score a century on a Test debut in a foreign cricket ground, making him the third overall to achieve this alongside Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw. Notably, he fell just short of a double century, scoring 171 runs and making him the highest-scoring Indian batsman on Test debut in an overseas match, surpassing Sourav Ganguly’s previous record of 131 runs achieved at Lord’s against England. • He revealed during an interview that when he used to live at the tents in Azad Maidan in Mumbai, his coach Jwala Singh asked him to score runs in a match if he wanted to train at his academy and get a place to live. Yashasvi scored runs in that match and later started living at Jwala’s house which relieved him of the financial stress.

• When coach Jwala Singh started training him, he was very weak as he was struggling financially. Later, it was revealed that he had very weak knees, hence Jwala worked on his strength training on the advice of a nutritionist.

• After hitting 98 runs not out against KKR on 11 May 2023, he said during the press conference that his dream was to open for India in the 2023 ODI World Cup at the number 3 batting position and hoped that Indian captain Rohit Sharma would consider him.
