Sunny Singh is an Indian criminal who murdered the mafia-turned-politician brothers Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf Ahmed in public in Prayagraj. He was an alleged member of the Rohit Yadav gang and Sundar Bhati gang.

Wiki/Biography

Sunny Singh aka Purane aka Chote Thakur was born in 2000 (age 23 years; as of 2023) in Kurara village of Hamirpur district of Uttar Pradesh. He was a troublesome child and often had fights with other children. He dropped out of school after completing 8th standard.

His father’s name is Late Jagat Singh who passed away in 2003, and his mother’s name is Krishna Devi who belongs to Tedha village under the Samerpur police station area. He has two brothers named Mangal Singh and Pintu Singh and one sister who is married. Mangal had an alcohol addiction and sold his agricultural lands before passing away in 2020. His brother Pintu runs a restaurant in the Manki Stand area of Hamirpur. His grandfather’s name is Kedar Singh.

Criminal History

Sunny became a gambler while growing up and used to steal money from his brother’s restaurant for gambling due to which his brother started maintaining distance from him. Later, he left his village and went to Bengaluru to do labour work. He earned Rs 20,000 and came back to Hamirpur; however, he lost all of his money in gambling. In 2016, he was involved in looting gold and silver jewellery from a couple travelling by bike near Mishripur village of Kurara in Hamirpur when the first case was registered against him. He became a member of the Rohit Yadav gang later and was involved in many lootings. He got involved in a gunfight with police and was arrested and sent to jail.

Association with Sundar Bhati Gang

He came in contact with the dreaded gangster Sundar Bhati in Hamirpur jail in 2021 and became a member of the Bhati gang; however, they had an alleged fight on 30 May 2022 after which jails of both were changed to avoid any future escalation. He once came out of jail when he got in a fight with Babu Yadav of Patara village of Kurara in Hamirpur and shot at Yadav; however, the shots did not hit Yadav. There are more than 15 cases against Sunny related to illegal arms possession, extortion, loot, and attempt to murder, and he is listed as history sheeter number 13 in Kurara police station in Hamirpur district of Uttar Pradesh.

Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf Ahmed Murder

Sunny, along with his two aides named Lovelesh Tiwari of Banda and Arun Maurya of Kasganj, gunned down the notorious gangster turned politician brothers Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf Ahmed at 10:30 pm on 15 April 2023 in front of media persons and police at MLN Medical College in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh when the brothers were addressing media persons while going for a medical checkup.

They fired more than 30 rounds using Turkiye-made Jigana and Girsan pistols which are banned in India and cost Rs 6-8 lakhs each and killed the brothers on the spot. An autopsy revealed that Atiq was hit by 8 bullets, Ashraf was hit by 6 bullets, and critical parts of their bodies got hit which resulted in instant death. The trio posed as journalists to gain access to the gangster brothers, fired at them from close range and surrendered after making sure that the brothers were dead. They chanted Jai Sri Ram and Surrender slogans while the policemen captured them.

Police said that during the initial interrogation, the trio said that they killed the mafia brothers to become popular as they wanted to become a mafia like the Ahmed brothers. Later investigations revealed that they were paid more than Rs 3 crores to execute the deadly plan. A case was filed against Sunny and two other killers under IPC sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 307 (attempt to murder). Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath conducted an emergency meeting at his residence with top Police officials and imposed section 144 on Uttar Pradesh state. Facts/Trivia

  • His brother Pintu said that Sunny was jobless and often got into fights with people in the area.
  • His mother Krishna Devi worked as a cook at weddings and local programs in order to sustain the family after the death of his father in 2003.
  • He worked at a tea shop and later as a truck cleaner while growing up.
  • He specialises in shooting with his left hand.
  • It was alleged that he was the shooter who shot the first bullet towards Ashraf Ahmed.
  • One of his friends said while talking to the media that Sunny told him 3-4 days before killing Atiq and Ashraf that he was going to do something big which would make his name very famous.
  • Due to his close proximity with the gangster Sundar Bhati, there were some allegations that henchmen of the Bhati gang provided the weapons and other things to him and the other two killers and might have had a hand behind the killing.
