Satyen Kappu

Satyen Kappu was a veteran Indian actor. He is best known for playing the role of Ramlal in the iconic Bollywood film, ‘Sholay’ (1975).

Satyen Kappu was born in 1931 (age 76 years; at the time of death) in Panipat, Punjab, British India.

He was married and blessed with four daughters, and two of his daughters are, Tripti Kappu Sharma and Uma Bhardwaj.

Career

In 1952, he started working as a theatre actor with the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) in Bombay. He acted in more than 390 films from the early 1960s to 2000s. He debuted in the Bollywood film, ‘Kabuliwala’ (1961). Some of his Hindi films are ‘Sapno Ka Saudagar’ (1968), ‘Chhoti Bahu’ (1971), ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’ (1972), ‘Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche’ (1972), ‘Yaadon Ki Baaraat’ (1973), ‘Benaam’ (1974), ‘Kala Sona’ (1975), ‘Don’ (1978), ‘The Burning Train’ (1980), ‘Main Aur Mera Haathi’ (1981), ‘Naseeb Apna Apna’ (1986), and ‘Raja Bhaiya’ (2003).

 

He played the role of Amitabh Bachchan‘s father in the Bollywood film, ‘Deewaar’ (1975). He dubbed for the main villain’s voice in ‘Gehri Chaal’ (1973) and for Mohammed Al Fardin’s dialogues in ‘Subah-O-Shaam’ (1972).

Death

He died on 27 October 2007 in Sunder Nagar, Mumbai; due to a cardiac arrest. Reportedly, he was a diabetes patient and had high blood pressure. His funeral was held at the Oshiwara crematorium in Mumbai.

  • His real name was Satyender Kapoor and was also known as Satyen Kapoor.
  • In 1994, his family started a film production company, ‘Satyen Kappu Film Productions.’
  • His last film is ‘Sarhad Paar’ (2006), in which he played the role of Taau.
