His father, K. Mutyala Reddy, supported Nitish’s dream to become a cricketer from a young age. Later, Mutyala was given a transfer to Udaipur, Rajasthan; however, his father declined the offer and quit his job at Hindustan Zinc Limited. In an interview, the cricketer revealed that his father left his job to ensure the cricketer received proper training at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, as Mutyala was not convinced about the cricket facilities and the training quality at Udaipur, Rajasthan. He was ten or twelve years old when his father quit his job amidst the protest from family and friends; however, it did not affect Mutyala, who was determined to make his son a professional cricketer. Nitish Kumar Reddy has represented Andhra Under-14, Andhra Under-16, Andhra Under-19 B, Andhra Under-19, India Under-19 Green, India Under-19 A, Andhra, and Godavari Titans at the domestic level. He started his cricketing journey with various coaching camps organised by the VDCA. In 2015, the cricketer was part of the Andhra Under-14 team, which participated in the 2015-2016 season of the South Zone Inter State Under-14 Tournament. In the opening match on 6 January 2016, he scored 76 runs from 163 balls against the Tamil Nadu Under-14, marking his highest score in the tournament. He scored 152 runs at an average of 38.00, including two half-centuries from four matches in the 2015-2016 South Zone Inter State Under-14 Tournament.

In 2017, he was named to the Andhra Under-16 team for the 2017-2018 Vijay Merchant Trophy (South Zone). Reddy scored 301 runs from 407 balls and took a wicket against the Tamil Nadu Under-16 in the opening match in December 2017. On 9 January 2018, the cricketer was named to the playing eleven of the Andhra Under-16 team against the Nagaland Under-16 team for the pre-quarterfinal of the Vijay Merchant Trophy. Nitish took a three-wicket haul in both innings and scored 441 runs from 336 balls; Andhra won the match by innings and 678 runs.

Andhra faced the Madhya Pradesh Under-16 team in the quarter-final on 14 January 2018, and he took a five-wicket haul; however, he struggled with his batting performance and was dismissed on a duck in the first innings. In the second innings, he scored eight runs; however, Madhya Pradesh won the match by an innings and 81 runs. The cricketer took 26 wickets in the tournament, including two five-wicket hauls. He was the top scorer with 1237 runs at an average of 176.71, including four centuries and two half-centuries in the Vijay Merchant Trophy from seven matches between 1 December 2017 and 15 January 2018.

Nitish was part of the India Under-19 B team, which participated in the 2018-2019 Quadrangular Under-19 Tournament in September 2018. In his debut match for the India Under-19 B team on 14 September 2018, he took two wickets at an economy of 5.29 and scored two runs against Afghanistan Under-19. On 18 September 2018, he was named to the playing eleven for the final against India Under-19 A; he scored eight runs from 13 balls. India Under-19 B defeated India Under-19 A by ten runs and lifted the trophy. In October 2018, the cricketer was selected for the Andhra Under-19 team for the 2018-2019 Vinoo Mankad Trophy Inter-State Tournament. On 10 October 2018, during a league match against the Punjab under-19 team, Reddy took a three-wicket haul from ten overs at an economy of 4.50. The cricketer played ten matches, scored 351 runs, and took 12 wickets for the Andhra Under-19 team in the 2018-2019 Vinoo Mankad Trophy Inter-State Tournament between 5 October 2018 and 1 November 2018. Nitish’s consistent performances with the Andhra under-19 team did not go unnoticed, and in November 2018, the cricketer was named to the India Under-19 Green team for the 2018-2019 Under-19 Challenger Trophy. On 10 November 2018, he scored 12 runs and took two wickets against the India Under-19 Yellow in the opening match of the Challenger Trophy. In November 2018, Nitish was part of the Andhra Under-19 team for the 2018-2019 Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy. On 3 December 2018, he took a three-wicket haul and scored 13 runs against the Orissa Under-19 team. Later, Reddy scored 155 runs from 252 balls and took a wicket against the Goa Under-19 team in a group stage match. Reddy scored 50 runs from 82 balls against the Mumbai Under-19 team on 9 October 2019. He took a three-wicket haul from 9.5 overs at an economy of 2.34 and scored 16 runs against Chhattisgarh Under-19 on 13 October 2018. The cricketer scored 83 runs from 120 balls against the Tamil Nadu Under-19 team on 15 October 2019, his highest score in the 2019-2020 season of the Vinoo Mankad Trophy Inter-State Tournament. He played eight matches in the tournament between 4 October 2019 and 23 October 2019; he scored 276 runs with a strike rate of 57.02 and took 13 wickets at an economy of 3.81. The cricketer took eight wickets and scored 66 runs from four matches between 11 November 2019 and 17 November 2019 in the tournament. Nitish was the second-highest wicket-taker in the 2019-2020 Under-19 Challenger Trophy. In December 2019, Reddy was part of the Andhra team for the 2019-2020 season of the Ranji Trophy; this was the first time he was selected for the senior team. On 27 January 2020, the cricketer was named to the playing eleven of Andhra for the match against Kerala and scored 39 runs from 60 balls in the first innings; he also took the catch of Basil Thampi. In January 2021, Nitish was named to the Andhra team for the 2020-2021 season of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He made his List-A debut on 20 February 2021 against Vidarbha in the opening day fixture of the Vijay Hazare Trophy and scored 54 runs from 58 balls. The cricketer scored 163 runs with an average of 32.60 and took one wicket from six matches in the competition between 20 February 2021 and 8 March 2021. Later, Reddy was part of the Andhra team, which participated in the 2021-2022 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The cricketer made his T20 debut against Jammu and Kashmir on 4 November 2021 and bowled one over at an economy of 6.00. In December 2021, Nitish was named to the Andhra team, which participated in the 2021-2022 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He took two wickets from seven overs at an economy of 7.29 against Himachal Pradesh on 12 December 2021; however, Kumar was not named to the playing eleven for the rest of the matches in the tournament. Later, Reddy played for the Andhra team in the 2022-2023 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Nitish carried on his form and scored a half-century against Chhattisgarh on 23 November 2022. Reddy played seven matches in the 2022-2023 Vijay Hazare Trophy; he scored 130 runs and took seven wickets. In 2022, Nitish was named to the Andhra team, which participated in the 2022-2023 Ranji Trophy. On 20 December 2022, he took a four-wicket haul against Tamil Nadu in the group stage match of the tournament. Nitish scored 160 runs with an average of 11.42, and took 25 wickets with an average of 26.12 from eight matches between 13 December 2022 and 31 January 2023 in the Ranji Trophy, and was the third-highest wicket-taker for Andhra in the season.

Indian Premier League (IPL)

In December 2022, he was signed by the Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of the 2023 season of the Indian Premier League. The cricketer made his debut against the Royal Challengers Bangalore on 18 May 2023; he bowled two overs at an economy of 9.50.

Three days later, Reddy was named to the playing eleven for Sunrisers Hyderabad’s last match of the season against the Mumbai Indians. He bowled three overs at an economy of 11.67; he won the Herbalife Active Catch of the Match award for his catch which dismissed Rohit Sharma.
