Dipendra Singh Airee is a Nepali cricketer who has made many records for Nepal in national and international tournaments. He hit headlines in September 2023 after scoring the fastest T20I fifty. He is regarded as one of the best Nepali middle-order players.

Dipendra Singh Airee was born in Gajjar, Mahendranagar, Kanchanpur, Nepal. He was interested in cricket since his childhood and played his first school-level competition organised by the Private and Boarding Schools Organisation Nepal (PABSON) while studying in 7th standard. He wanted to become a soldier while growing up, and his parents also did not want him to play cricket; however, when he was studying in 11th standard, he got an invitation to play in the Nepal Premier League, which he accepted and did not appear for the final exams. He later pursued a career in cricket.

Domestic

Dipendra debuted in List A (one-day) cricket on 11 March 2018 against Kenya. He made his first-class debut on 6 November 2019 against Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). He played for the Nepal Police Club (NPC) in the Prime Minister Cup and the Kathmandu Mayor’s Cup in 2022.

International

Under-19

He played for the Nepal Under-19 team in the 2016 Under-19 World Cup. He captained the team in the 2017 Under-19 Asia Cup where Nepal defeated India in a group-stage match.

ODI

He made his ODI debut on 1 August 2018 against the Netherlands, Nepal’s first ODI match, and scored 33 runs. He made his first ODI century on 26 March 2022 by scoring 105 runs against Papua New Guinea. He made his first ODI fifty on 14 November 2022 by scoring 54 runs against the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He showed his talent as an allrounder by taking 3 wickets for 18 runs against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on 6 March 2023.

T20I

He debuted in the T20I on 29 July 2018 against the Netherlands; however, the match was interrupted due to rain, and he did not get a chance to bat. He made his maiden T20I half-century on 20 April 2021 by scoring 60 runs against the Netherlands.

He scored his first T20I hundred on 2 April 2022 with 110 runs not out against Malaysia. He took 4 wickets for 18 runs against Papua New Guinea on 4 April 2022. During his record-breaking innings of the fastest T20I fifty on 27 September 2023 against Mongolia at the 19th Asian Games, he scored 52 runs not out off 10 balls, completing his fifty in 9 balls with 8 sixes; he broke Yuvraj Singh’s record of scoring a T20I fifty in 12 balls.

Controversy

Violating the Code of Conduct

In November 2019, Dipendra Singh Airee was appointed as vice-captain of the Nepal cricket team. In 2021, he, along with three other players named Gyanendra Malla, Kamal Singh Airee, and Sompal Kami expressed their dissatisfaction with their central contract and grading. The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) asked them to provide clarification, which they did; however, CAN was not satisfied with the clarification and removed Dipendra from vice-captaincy on 15 December 2021 and also said that these players would not be offered a central contract for the first six months of 2022.

CAN said that the players have violated the code of conduct by bringing the board into disrepute and said,

The players have signed the code of conduct with CAN but they did not follow it. As per article 3.3.1 of the code, the players should not make any statement to the media in ways to bring the game, ACC, ICC, board or office bearers into disrepute.” [3]The Kathmandu Post

In February 2023, he was put in grade A player by the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) for the central contract from January to June 2023. As per his grading, he earned a monthly salary of NRS 60,000.
