Hrithik Shokeen is an Indian cricketer who got into an argument with Kolkata Knight Riders’ captain Nitish Rana in the IPL match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians in 2023.

Hrithik Shokeen was born on Monday, 14 August 2000 (age 22 years; as of 2022) in Dwarka, New Delhi. His zodiac sign is Leo. He did his schooling at Modern School, Barakhamba Road. He liked playing cricket since childhood and used to play for four hours a day. In an interview, his father said that he never stopped playing even if he was injured. His father further said that he would never sit in his seat in school and would always run around. When his father used to visit school, his teachers told him that Hrithik’s energy should be used for something good so he decided to join an academy. According to his father, Hrithik was so dedicated to the game that he stopped attending birthday parties and weddings from getting distracted. When he was part of the Under-10 team, his coach said that he was not tall enough to appeal to LBW or not. He got selected for the Under-16 team of Delhi after he scored 263 runs off 62 balls in a U-14 club match. During Vijay Hazare’s trial, he took five wickets but was not selected for the Indian squad. In an interview, his father said that Hrithik used to practice (tippe) with him at 4 in the morning. His father used to turn on the torch of his phone so that he could practice.

In 2016, when he was part of the Modern School Barakhamba Road team, he took 5 wickets on 35 runs and defeated TYCA by 20 runs in Friendship Cup Tournament. In 2017, he smashed 236 runs for Mukesh Dhawan Academy in the Triangular Series match against West Delhi Dwarka. In February 2019, he won the ‘Man of the Match’ in the India U19 and South Africa U19 in the Youth Test Series.

In November 2019, he became part of the India U23 squad for the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Bangladesh. On 14 November 2019, he made his List A debut for India U23 against Nepal in the Emerging Teams Cup. As of 2022, he has played for his state team in eight List A games for India’s Emerging and U-23 teams in which he took eight wickets at an economy of 4.92 with the best bowling figures of 2/21. In October 2022, he was selected as the first tactical substitute known as “Impact Player” in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. In the match, the Delhi team had to chase a target of 167 against Manipur. Hrithik had replaced opener Hiten Dalal and earned figures of 2 for 13 in three overs. On 20 December 2022, he made his FC debut in a match against Delhi and Assam at Guwahati. In February 2023, he smashed 53 runs off 34 balls and made a 60-run partnership with opener Rohit Rayudu for Reliance 1 in DY Patil T20 Tournament. He also became the ‘Man of the Match’ and his team won the tournament.

Indian Premier League

In February 2022, he was bought by the Mumbai Indians in the auction for the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament. On 21 April 2022, he made his Twenty20 debut for the Mumbai Indians in the 2022 IPL.

Controversy

On 16 April 2023, Hrithik had a fight with Kolkata Knight Riders’ captain Nitish Rana in the first innings of the IPL match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians. Their fight happened in the ninth over of the match when Hrithik was seen saying something to Rana and Rana stopped in his tracks and turned around to say something to him. Hrithik bowled to Rana and took Rana’s wicket after the fielder Ramandeep Singh caught the ball. After taking his wicket, Hrithik turned to Rana and said something to him which turned into an argument with Rana. To stop the argument, Mumbai Indians’ skipper Suryakumar Yadav and the senior player in the game, Piyush Chawla intervened and stopped them. After the scene on the field, both the players were punished for breaching IPL’s Code of Conduct in match No.22 of the cash-rich league. MI captain Suryakumar Yadav was fined by the IPL for maintaining a slow over rate in Mumbai’s home game against the players. He was fined Rs.12 lakh under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences and for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct as well. Rana was fined 25 per cent of his match fee because he breached the IPL Code of Conduct during his side’s match against MI at the Wankhede Stadium after he admitted to the Level 1 Offence under Article 2.21 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct.
