Yash Ravi Singh Thakur was born on Monday, 28 December 1998 (age 24 years, as of 2022) in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh, India, whereas some sources said he was born in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The cricketer did his schooling at Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. In 2011, he joined the Pravin Hinganikar Cricket Academy (PHCA) in Nagpur, Maharashtra. Yash started as a wicketkeeper batter, and later, he got interested in bowling and started training as a fast bowler at the PHCA academy under the guidance of Pravin Hinganikar and Nitin Kanhere.

Yash Thakur has represented Chhattisgarh Under-16, Chhattisgarh Under-19, India Under-19, and the Vidarbha team at the domestic level. In 2013, he was named to the Chhattisgarh Under-16 team for the 2013-2014 season of the Vijay Merchant Trophy; in the opening match on 1 December 2013, he scored 26 runs against Rajasthan Under-16. Later, he scored three runs from two innings in his last appearance in the 2013-2014 season of the Vijay Merchant Trophy against Madhya Pradesh Under-16. In 2015, Yash was part of the Chhattisgarh Under-16 team, which participated in the 2015-2016 season of the Cooch Behar Trophy. On 5 November 2015, in the first innings against the Himachal Pradesh Under-19, Thakur was dismissed on duck, and he scored one run in the second innings. The cricketer scored eight runs in the first innings against Maharashtra Under-19 on 14 November 2015 and scored 73 runs (not out) from 161 balls in the next innings.

On 5 December 2015, Yash scored one run in the first innings against Rajasthan Under-19. In the second innings, he scored 99 runs from 174 balls. The cricketer played six matches in the Cooch Behar Trophy between 5 November 2015 and 19 December 2015; he scored 240 runs with an average of 26.66. In 2016, Thakur was named to the Chhattisgarh Under-19 team for the 2016-2017 season of the Late Shri JY Lele All India Under-19 One Day Invitation Tournament. In September 2016, the cricketer was part of the Chhattisgarh Under-19 team for the 2016-2017 Vinoo Mankad Trophy Inter-State Tournament. Yash scored 47 runs from 82 balls against Uttar Pradesh Under-19 on 7 October 2016. Thakur was named to the Chhattisgarh Under-19 team for the 2016-2017 season of the Cooch Behar Trophy in October 2016. On 14 November 2016, he scored 42 runs and took one catch from two innings against Baroda Under-19. Three days later, on 12 December 2016, Yash scored 141 runs from 352 balls in the first innings against Vidarbha Under-19; however, in the second innings, he was dismissed on duck.

The cricketer scored 263 runs with an average of 32.87 from five matches for Chhattisgarh Under-19 between 14 November 2016 and 19 December 2016 in the Cooch Behar Trophy. Following his stellar performances with the Chhattisgarh Under-19 team, Thakur was named to the India Under-19 team for the 2016-2017 Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Under-19s Asia Cup in November 2016. He debuted for the India Under-19 team in the ODI format on 15 December 2016 against Malaysia Under-19; he took two wickets from five overs at an economy of 3.80. Later, in the semi-final match against Afghanistan Under-19, Yash took two wickets. On 23 December 2016, in the final against Sri Lanka Under-19, the cricketer took one wicket and dismissed PAKP Jayawickrama through a run-out. Thakur did not bat in any matches of the tournament. On 16 August 2017, Thakur took one wicket and was dismissed on a duck; this was his final match in the youth ODI format. Later, Yash was named to the Vidarbha team for the 2017-2018 season of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The cricketer took a four-wicket haul from four overs at an economy of 5.50 against Uttarakhand in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on 18 October 2022. Yash took 15 wickets at an economy of 7.17 from ten matches in the competition between 11 October 2022 and 3 November 2022. Indian Premier League

The Lucknow Super Giants announced they signed the cricketer ahead of the 2023 season of the Indian Premier League in December 2022. Yash made his IPL debut on 3 April 2023 against the Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai; Thakur bowled four overs at an economy of 9.00 and took one catch. On 7 April 2023, he was named to the playing eleven for the IPL league match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad; he bowled three overs at an economy of 7.67 and took his maiden IPL wicket.

The cricketer registered a four-wicket haul from 3.5 overs at an economy of 9.65 against the Punjab Kings on 28 April 2023. Later, Yash was named to the playing eleven against the Mumbai Indians and took two wickets from four overs. Thakur played for the Lucknow Super Giants in the eliminator match against the Mumbai Indians on 24 May 2023 and took a three-wicket haul from four overs at an economy of 8.50. Thakur took 13 wickets with an average of 22.23 from nine matches in the IPL between 3 April 2023 and 24 May 2023, and he did not bat in any of the innings.

• In an interview, he revealed that he preferred sports over studies. Later, when he finished his twelfth standard examinations, he reportedly took a two-year break from his studies to focus on his cricket career.

• He started his cricket career as a wicketkeeper batter like his idol, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and played in a couple of junior cricket tournaments as a wicketkeeper; however, his first coach, Pravin Hinganikar, suggested the cricketer become a fast bowler. Later, while speaking about his journey as a cricketer, in an interview, Thakur pointed out that it was due to his coach’s guidance that he became a fast bowler and expressed his gratitude.
