Marnus Labuschagne is a South African-Australian cricketer who rose to prominence for batting exploits in test cricket. He is regarded as one of the best test batsmen of the early 2020s. He emerged as one of the best allrounders with right-hand batting and right-arm leg-break spin bowling.

Marnus Labuschagne was born on Wednesday, 22 June 1994 (age 28 years; as of 2022) in Klerksdorp, North West Province, South Africa. His zodiac sign is Cancer. He moved to Australia at the age of 10 with his family when his father got work in Australia. He was interested in playing cricket since a very young age and watched cricket on his TV all day long when no one was at home. He played in school cricket in South Africa and kept on playing after moving to Australia as well. He attended Brisbane High School. He trained under coaches Blair Copeland, Neil D’Costa, Adam Hollioake, and Matthew Maynard during the course of his career.

Religious Views

He is a devout Christian and was baptised at the age of 17 at Gateway Baptist Church in Redlands, Brisbane. In an interview, he credited his upbringing as a reason for his belief in Christianity and said he plays with an eagle sticker on his bat which represents a verse from Isaiah 40:31. He said,

For me, my faith was always a part of my journey. So everyone knew that was who I was. There was no hiding from that. The biggest lesson I’ve learnt is you’ve just got to be who you are. He played for Queensland under-12, under-15, under-17, and under-19 teams before making his first-class debut on 31 October 2014 at Adelaide Oval in the 2014-15 Sheffield Shield as a 20-year-old and scored 83 runs in the first innings of the match against South Australia. He captained the under-19 team of Queensland in the 2012–13 National Championships. He played his debut List A match on 5 October 2015 against Tasmania in the 2015 One Day Cup. In his eighth match in the Sheffield Shield, he made his first first-class century with a score of 112 runs against South Australia at Brisbane Cricket Ground, Brisbane. In the 2016 One Day Cup, he was named Player of the Tournament after he scored 273 runs with an average of 45 in the tournament. In the 2017-18 Sheffield Shield won by his team Queensland, he emerged as the top runscorer for Queensland with 795 runs at an average of 39.75 with two centuries and second-highest runscorer of the tournament and was named in the Sheffield Shield team of the season by Cricket Australia. He plays for Easts-Redlands District Cricket Club in the Brisbane Grade Cricket.

He also played for the Australia-A team and was a member of the National Performance Squad selected by Cricket Australia which toured India in 2017.

Marnus Labuschagne played his debut test match on 7 October 2018 against Pakistan at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and scored 0 runs in the first innings and 13 runs in the second innings of the match. In January 2019, he made his first test half-century with a score of 81 runs in the first innings of the test match against Sri Lanka at Brisbane Cricket Ground, Brisbane. In November 2019, during the two-match test series against Pakistan in Australia, he scored his first/maiden test century with a score of 185 runs in the first innings of the first test at Brisbane Cricket Ground, Brisbane and made 162 runs in the first innings of the second test at Adelaide Oval, Adelaide; his average during the series was 173.50. During the three-test match series against New Zealand in 2019-20, he scored 143 runs in the first innings and 50 runs in the second innings of the first test match at Perth Stadium, Perth and 215 runs in the first innings and 59 runs in the second innings of the third test match at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney. In January 2021, he scored 108 runs in the first innings of the test match against India at Brisbane Cricket Ground, Brisbane. In December 2021, he scored 103 runs in the first innings and 51 runs in the second innings of the test match against England at Adelaide Oval, Adelaide. In July 2022, he scored 104 runs in the first innings of the test match against Sri Lanka at Galle International Stadium, Galle. He played his debut ODI match on 14 January 2020 against India at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, India; however, he did not bat as the target given by India was chased by Australian openers. He made his first half-century on 19 January 2020 with a score of 54 runs against India on 19 January 2020 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. He made his first ODI century on 7 March 2020 with a score of 108 runs against South Africa at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom, South Africa. On 29 November 2020, he made 70 runs against India at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney. On 31 March 2022, he scored 59 runs against Pakistan at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. Club Level

In 2013, he played for Plymouth Cricket Club in the Devon Premier League in England, and in 2014, he played for Sandwich Town Cricket Club in the Kent Premier League.

County

He signed with the Glamorgan County Cricket Club in April 2019 for the 2019 English cricket season. He scored 182 runs against Sussex in a match of the Specsavers County Championship at Hove, Sussex. He scored 1114 runs in the 2019 county season with three centuries and also emerged as the second-highest runscorer in the Second Division of the County Championship and took 19 wickets. He re-signed with the  Glamorgan County Cricket Club for the next two seasons. His contract was extended for one extra season after the 2020 season was disrupted due to the onset of the Covid-19 endemic.

Big Bash League (BBL)

He signed with the Brisbane Heat team in November 2016. He played his debut match in BBL on 17 January 2017 against Melbourne Stars at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne. On 27 January 2023, he scored his first BBL half-century with a score of 73 runs not off 48 balls with seven fours and two sixes against Sydney Thunders at Sydney Showground Stadium, Sydney.

• On 29 December 2017, he became the first cricketer to be fined 5 runs under the then-newly introduced law which prohibited the mimicking of collecting the ball and throwing it at stumps to deceive batsmen. During the 27th over of the match against Cricket Australia XI in the JLT One-Day Cup 2017 at Brisbane Cricket Ground, Brisbane, he dived to field the shot hit by the batsman Param Uppal; however, he was unable to stop it, yet he acted like throwing the ball at the stumps which caused Uppal to stutter before completing the single. • On 18 August 2019, he became the first cricketer to be substituted as a Concussion substitute as Australian player Steven Smith got injured and ruled out of the third test in the 2019 Ashes series after he suffered a concussion. • On 24 August 2019, he became the fifth cricketer and fourth Australian player to make two scores in a match greater than the total score made by the opposite team in one innings in a test. • On 3 December 2022, he became the eighth batsman and third Australian batsman to score a double century and a century in the same test match after he scored 204 runs in the first innings and 104 runs not out in the second innings of the test match against West Indies at Perth Stadium, Perth.

• On 9 December 2022, he became the second-fastest batsman to complete 3000 runs in the test which he scored in 51 innings. He was behind only the Australian player Don Bradman and equalled the record of West Indies player Everton Weekes.

• In December 2022, he became the second Australian batsman to score three centuries in consecutive innings twice in the test.

Controversies

Teasing Indian openers

While fielding during the test match against India on 8 January 2021, he teased both Indian openers, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill in a move to distract them. He asked Gill about his favourite batsman to which Gill replied he would tell him after the match and Labuschagne replied that he should tell him after the ball if it’s Sachin Tendulkar or Virat Kohli. He then turned to Rohit and asked him how did he spend his quarantine to which Rohit did not say anything. ^[7]Outlook

Given not out after the catch

During the second session of the first day of the test against South Africa on 4 January 2023 at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney, he nicked a ball bowled by Marco Jansen to Simon Harmer who caught the ball; however, the umpire Paul Reiffel sent the decision to the third umpire Richard Kettleborough who gave him not out. Smoking signal on the cricket field

On 4 January 2023, he did a smoking gesture with his fingers on his mouth while batting against South Africa at Sydney Cricket Ground which surprised the players, commentators, and fans who thought he was asking for a cigarette on the ground. • On 9 October 2015, he was playing against Commonwealth Bank Bushrangers in Blacktown in the Matador BBQs One-Day Cup match, he got out in two ways on the same ball bowled by the spinner Jon Holland. He tried to play a reverse sweep shot but missed and the ball hit the pad. He was given out LBW by the Umpire Gerard Abood; however, the ball also hit the stumps, and he was given out by bowled out in accordance with Law 30 of the Laws of Cricket which says that bowled out supersedes other forms of dismissal. ^[13]Cricket Australia
