Career

When he was twelve years old, he joined Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. During his graduation, he was part of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad and worked as town president and a state executive member of the organization. He was also the town secretary, town president, national secretary of Kerala and in charge of Tamil Nadu for the organization. In 1994, he started working as the Director of The Karimnagar Co-operative Urban Bank and worked there till 2003.

Politics

In 1996, during the elections, he helped in campaigning for BJP leader LK Advani’s Surat Rath Yatra for 35 days. From 2005 to 2019, he was the Municipal Corporator for Karimnagar. In 2014, he contested the State Assembly elections as a BJP candidate but was unable to win the seat. In 2018, he contested the State Assembly elections as a BJP candidate but could not win a seat. On 23 May 2019, he was elected as a member of the Lok Sabha from the Karimnagar constituency. On 11 March 2020, he was elected as the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Telangana. Kumar contested the 2023 Telangana Legislative Assembly elections from the Karimnagar constituency on a ticket from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He, however, lost the elections to the BRS candidate Gangula Kamalakar.

Controversies

Alleged for the leak of SSC paper

On 6 April 2023, he was sent to judicial custody till April 19 in the SSC paper leak case. After he was detained by the police, there were protests demanding his release. Some of his party workers even said that the police did not state clear reasons to detain him. His party workers gathered around the police station and raised slogans against Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. Some of them also claimed that it was a conspiracy by the Telangana government to distract people from the BRS party’s failures regarding school and job examinations. In a police statement, it was said that the main culprit in the case was a person named Shiv Ganesh who shared the paper on WhatsApp. Later, journalist Boora Prashant who received the paper on WhatsApp shared the news with various media outlets about the paper leak. According to BJP, the Chief Minister KCR and the BRS party tried to link the journalist with BJP, but Sanjay was granted bail on the night of 6 April 2023 by a Hanamkonda court in the Warangal district. Judicial remand against Sanjay

In January 2022, he and more than 150 BJP members were taken into 14-day judicial remand for allegedly violating Covid-19 norms and assaulting a public servant during a ‘Jagarana’ protest (a night vigil) for the teachers and other government employees. The protest was against the government’s GO3317 rule which stated a zonal system in the allocation of jobs and transfers. Their arrest was criticized by leaders including national president J P Nadda and Union minister G Kishan Reddy. Sanjay was produced in court on charges of violating provisions of the Disaster Management Act, Indian Penal Code Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant) and Section 333 of the IPC (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty). Facts/Trivia

  • In 2019, his win came as a shock to many people because he was not politically stable as compared to his opponents. He became one of four Bharatiya Janata Party MPs from Telangana.
  • In 2020, he criticized the film RRR and even threatened S. S. Rajamouli saying his party workers would burn the theatres which will broadcast the movie. He opposed the character of Komaram Bheem who was shown wearing a Muslim outfit in the film. Later, Rajamouli said that the picture was based on Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju’s characters but was not their biopic. However, when the song ‘Natu Natu’ from the film RRR won the Oscar award in 2023, he took to Twitter to congratulate the makers of the film.

  • In November 2022, he was denied permission for the fifth phase of his ‘Praja Sangrama Yatra’ and a public meeting in the Bhainsa town of Nirmal district after which he filed a petition in the High Court. The police officials who stopped him stated that the situation in the area was communally sensitive and therefore, he was stopped. The police also posted some police personnel near his house in Karimnagar to make sure he does not go for the yatra. He took to Twitter to talk about the matter and said that he would go to court in relation to the case.

  • In January 2023, his elder son Bhageerath was accused of assaulting a student at his university. He was later released on bail.
