Asheesh Singh is Municipal Commissioner of Indore Municipal Corporation. Under the leadership of Asheesh Singh, 13 lakh tonnes of garbage was cleaned in just six months in Indore.

He was born on Thursday, 29 November 1984 (age 35 years; as in 2019), in Kherwa village of a small city named Hardoi near Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. His/Her zodiac sign is Sagittarius. He has completed B A from CSJM University Kanpur. Since his childhood, he wanted to do something big for society. To achieve his mission for the welfare of society, he started preparing for the civil services and became an IAS officer of the 2010 batch.

Family, Caste & Wife

He was born into a Hindu family. His father was a school teacher. He gives all credit behind his success to his father who has always motivated him to become an IAS officer. He got married on 3 May 2014. His wife Katha Kartiki has also been a strong pillar in all his endeavours.

Career

He is a 2010-batch IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre. In 2016, he was posted as the CEO, Zila Panchayat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He has also served as the Additional Municipal Commissioner of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. In 2018, he was appointed as the Municipal Commissioner of the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC). After doing several inspections in Indore, he found that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan was working at a slow pace. Initially, the project was allocated to the private agencies for which they charged Rs 475 per cubic metre. Only 2 lakh tonnes of garbage had been cleared by them in two years.

He decided to work on this project with his team, and they successfully cleared 13 lakhs tonnes of garbage in six months in a budget of Rs. 10 crores only. When asked about this achievement, he said,

The machines were rented to us at a cost of Rs 7 lakh per machine per month. We operated the machine for 14-15 hours daily using our own resources, and within six months, 13 lakhs tonnes of garbage was cleared.”

Every morning from around 6.30 to 10.30, he takes a city round to examine how well the work is going. He said in an interview

Important municipal services like cleaning and water supply begin early. For effective control over it, you have to be in the field in the morning. During the morning tour, I also monitor other projects like SMART city, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) mission, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and other construction activities on the field.”

Machines have been installed by them to separate dry waste and wet waste. Polythenes and plastic waste have been used in road construction and further use of it has been completely banned. They have also started two schemes ‘Bartan Bhandar’ and ‘Jhola Yojna.’ Bartan Bhandars rent utensils for free to the people for functions or parties and stop using disposable cutlery. Whereas, Jhola scheme is to encourage people to use Khadi bags rather than poly bags.
