Initially, the project was allocated to the private agencies for which they charged Rs 475 per cubic metre. Only 2 lakh tonnes of garbage had been cleared by them in two years.
He decided to work on this project with his team, and they successfully cleared 13 lakhs tonnes of garbage in six months in a budget of Rs. 10 crores only. When asked about this achievement, he said,
The machines were rented to us at a cost of Rs 7 lakh per machine per month. We operated the machine for 14-15 hours daily using our own resources, and within six months, 13 lakhs tonnes of garbage was cleared.”
Every morning from around 6.30 to 10.30, he takes a city round to examine how well the work is going. He said in an interview
Important municipal services like cleaning and water supply begin early. For effective control over it, you have to be in the field in the morning. During the morning tour, I also monitor other projects like SMART city, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) mission, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) and other construction activities on the field.”
Machines have been installed by them to separate dry waste and wet waste. Polythenes and plastic waste have been used in road construction and further use of it has been completely banned. They have also started two schemes ‘Bartan Bhandar’ and ‘Jhola Yojna.’ Bartan Bhandars rent utensils for free to the people for functions or parties and stop using disposable cutlery.
