Career

On 26 June 1992, she became the Circle Officer (A) and worked in the post till 30 September 1992 in Dotma, Assam. She became the Extra Assistant Commissioner from 3 February 1993 to 16 November 1994, Morigaon, Assam. She was the Extra Assistant Commissioner at Pragjyotishpur, Assam from 20 November 1994 to 4 March 1997. She worked as the Administrative Officer of the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare from 4 March 1997 to 19 August 1999. From 19 September 1999 to 23 April 2003, she served as the Deputy Director of Panchayat and Rural Development. She was a special officer from 23 April 2003 to 16 February 2004. On 22 February 2004, she became the Extra Assistant Commissioner in Nalbari, Assam and worked till 7 November 2006. She became the Sub Divisional Officer (Sadar) from 7 November 2006 to 8 October 2007. She was the Under Secretary of Transformation and D.Deptt. (P. & D. Deptt.) from 10 October 2007 to 20 February 2010. She served as the Deputy Secretary of Transformation and D.Deptt.(P. & D. Deptt.) from 20 February 2010 to 7 October 2014. She was the Deputy Secretary of the Cultural Affairs Department from 8 October 2014 to 29 April 2015. She served as the Deputy Secretary of Education (Elementary) from 29 April 2015 to 28 December 2015. She became the Joint Secretary of Education (Elementary) from 28 December 2015 to 12 September 2018. From 12 September 2018 to 15 May 2020, she was the Additional Secretary of Education (Elementary). On 15 May 2020, she was appointed as the Secretary of Education (Elementary). She was the Secretary to the Government of Assam, Agriculture Department in 2021. In July 2021, she was promoted to Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in the Assam-Meghalaya cadre.

Controversy

In March 2023, the Assam government suspended her as the IAS after her involvement in a case of financial irregularities and misappropriation of funds. Reportedly, when she was the Executive cum Director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), she opened five bank accounts without the approval of the Assam government.Β The notification about her suspension read,

It has also been reported she was the sole signatory and FRBM rules were not followed in respect of opening those 5 accounts. A report of enquiry on the functioning of ODL under SCERT found financial irregularities and very credible references of the misappropriation of fund.”

Her suspension was placed under rule 3(1) of the All India Services (Disciple and Appeal) Rules, 1969. In April 2023, she and her son-in-law Ajit Pal Singh were accused of embezzling Rs. 105 crores without showing any work order. After the investigation, it was alleged that she opened a fake institution constructing a smart class with a budget of Rs. 13 crores. The other education officers involved in scamming Rs. 100 crores include NL Sonowal, Jaychandra Lashkar, Ramizuddin Ahmed and fourth-class employee Rubul Ali.
