K. K. Venugopal is the 15th Attorney General of India. On 30 June 2017, he was appointed as the Attorney General of India by Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India. Before becoming the Attorney General of India, he was a senior advocate and an Indian constitutional lawyer in the Supreme Court of India.

Kottayan Katankot Venugopal was born on 6 September 1931 (Sunday) (age 89 years; as in 2020) in Kanhangad, Kasaragod district, Kerala, and he grew up and did his schooling from Mangalore. His zodiac sign is Virgo. He obtained a B.Sc. degree in Physics from Madras Christian College in Chennai. Further, he pursued law from Raja Lakhamgouda Law College in Belgaum, Karnataka.

Venugopal got married to Shantha Konath Venugopal in a traditional way on 28 May 1958. He has two sons and one daughter from the marriage. His elder son is Krishnan Venugopal (senior advocate, Supreme Court) and his younger son is Kannan Venugopal. The name of his daughter is Lakshmi Venugopal. [2]NDTV

Career

After completing his formal education, Venugopal started his career as a lawyer in the year 1954 in Mysore. After this, he started his practice under his father in the High Court of Madras and went on to have over 5 decades of experience with him. He moved to Delhi in 1972, where he was appointed as a senior advocate in the Supreme Court of India. In his career, Venugopal has worked with several high-profile cases, like the Babri Masjid demolition case. In the case, BJP leaders L K Advani and Atal Bihari Vajpayee were accused of inciting protests, which led to the demolition of Babri Masjid. As the Attorney General of India, K. K. Venugopal has been in the limelight quite a few times and in March 2019, he represented the Narendra Modi government in the Supreme Court over the matter of Rafale deal and the controversy related to it.

Controversies

  • K. K. VenugopalĀ received heavy criticism after he asked senior advocate Anand Grover to address senior advocate Indira Jaising as his ā€œwifeā€ and not ā€œMs. Jaisingā€ in the Supreme Court in 2019.
    Later, Indira Jaising was offended by this comment and asked Venugopal to take back his statement saying that she is an individual herself person and she has her own identity. [3]The Print

  • For the period of 1996-1997, he was appointed as the president of the International Association of Lawyers (Union Internationale des Avocats).
  • The Royal Government of Bhutan appointed K. K. Venugopal to visit the country and help them draft the Constitution of Bhutan.
  • In 2002, Venugopal was awarded Padma Bhushan which is the third-highest civilian honour in the country.
  • In 2015, he was awarded Padma Vibhushan which is the second-highest civilian honour in the country, which is given by the Government of India.
