Vishnu Saravanan was born on Wednesday, 24 February 1999 (age 24 years; as of 2023) in Kannamangalam, district Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India. His zodiac sign is Pisces. He completed his schooling at the Army School in Mumbai and graduation with a Bachelor of Business Administration at the University of Mumbai. Vishnu Saravanan’s father, Ramachandran Saravanan, is a former national-level medalist in sailing and retired Subedar Major at the Indian Army Yachting Node, South Mumbai. Vishnu’s mother, Rajeshwari Saravanan, is a homemaker. He has a sister named Ramya Saravanan, who is a sailor.

Domestic Championships

In 2011, Vishnu Saravanan participated in the Optimist Coastal National Championship and scored four bullets in the ten-race series. In 2012, he was selected after giving trials for the National Squad Selection and Ranking Regatta. In 2013, Vishnu participated in the National Inland Optimist Championship in the Optimistic category. In 2016, he participated in the YAI Youth Nationals in which he secured the first position. In 2017, he took part in the YAI National Championship and attained the first spot followed by the 2018 YAI Senior National Championship and secured the first position. International Championships

In 2010, Vishnu made his international debut with the IODA Asian Championship and finished 74th in the Optimist category. In 2012, he participated in Optimist at the LIRP Regatta in which he attained the third position internationally. In 2014, Vishnu took part in the India International Regatta, where he bagged the first position. In 2019, he secured the third position in the ILCA Laser under-21 World Championship. Vishnu qualified under merit for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 in the Laser STD Class. He secured the 23rd and 22nd in the fifth and sixth races, respectively, and booked a Tokyo Olympics quota. In 2022, he participated in the Trofeo Princess Sofia Regatta held in Spain and secured the 25th position.

Facts/Trivia

  • Vishnu’s family moved to Mumbai when he was just four years old. At the age of six, Vishnu Saravanan used to accompany his father to the Army Yachting Node in Colaba, Mumbai, and watch him windsurf, and that’s when he decided to pursue the sport as a career. Vishnu’s father bought him an Optimist sailing dinghy and started training him at the Arabian Sea when he turned nine years old. [7]The Indian Express

  • He was a javelin player in his school and was one-year junior to Neeraj Chopra. Vishnu also participated in the National javelin championship. He was equally interested in football and was close to choosing the sport as his full-time career option before his father told him how tough the team sports are.   • In 2022, Vishnu and Nethra Kumanan took the Surya Namaskar Challenge to promote yoga internationally. The duo performed the challenge in Malta and Spain respectively and involved the locals to join the challenge too. [11]Sports Authority of India

  • Vishnu missed the 18th Asian Games, which were held in 2018, as he was suffering from food poisoning.
  • In 2015, he was selected by the Madras Engineers Group Boys Sports Company and represented the group for a long time.
  • Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Vishnu’s sailing boats and equipment got stuck in Abu Dhabi; however, as soon as the Mussanah Open Championship was announced in 2021, Vishnu and his team spent a hefty amount of money to get all the equipment transported to Oman.
  • In 2017, he was the youngest sailor to win the laser standard national championship held in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh.
