Later, he started living in Charkhi Dadri, Haryana. Gurdeep hails from a family of kabaddi players. His father, Sanjay Kumar, is a Kabaddi coach who used to train Border Security Force (BSF) players, and his uncle Sukhvir Singh Sangwan was a former player of the Indian National Kabaddi Team. Gurdeep grew up playing kabaddi with his brother, Nitesh Kumar, under the guidance of their father. Gurdeep and Nitesh watched their uncle Sukhvir Singh Sangwan win an illustrious gold medal in Kabaddi at the 2006 Asian Games, which fueled their passion for the sport. In season 6, Nitesh became the first player in KPL’s history to score 100 tackle points in a single campaign. Nitesh was also part of the Indian team that won the gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games.

In 2022, he was bought by UP Yoddhas for 10 lakhs for the Pro Kabaddi Season 9.
On 31 October 2022, he gave an impressive performance by scoring six tackle points in a match against Telugu Titans and was recognised as the Ace Defender of the Match, receiving Rs. 25000 as prize money.
