Vinay Rai is a South Indian actor who predominantly works in the Tamil film industry. He gained the most recognition for his roles in the films Unnale Unnale (2007), Jayamkondaan (2008), Endrendrum Punnagai (2013), and Aranmanai (2014). He has appeared as the antagonist in a number of films such as Thupparivaalan (2017), Doctor (2021), Etharkkum Thunindhavan (2022), and Christopher (2023).

Career

In 2007, Vinay Rai made his debut in the film industry with the Tamil-language film Unnale Unnale in which he starred alongside Sadha and Tanisha Mukherjee.

Vinay received various acting offers due to the Unnale Unnale film’s enormous success upon its release. He then starred in the Telugu film Vaana (2008), which did poorly at the box office and was later dubbed into Tamil in 2013 as Gnabagangal Thalattum. In 2008, he appeared in the Tamil language film Jayamkondaan which was a commercial and a critical success in which he played the role of an NRI civil engineer. His performance received positive reviews, and one of the critics said,

Vinay, as the protagonist is very comfortable in his role. He has expressive eyes, emotes well, and makes sure his audience isn’t disappointed.”

He made his voiceover debut in Saran’s Tamil-language film Modhi Vilayadu in 2009 and also starred in it, but the movie ended up receiving mostly negative reviews from critics. In 2011, he starred in the English-language 3-D science fiction disaster film Dam 999, but the film did not do well at the box office. In 2012, he appeared in the action comedy Tamil-language film Mirattal which is the remake of the Telugu film Dhee (2007). In 2013, he appeared in the comedy Tamil language film Onbadhule Guru. Although the movie received negative reviews from critics when it first came out, it did commercially well at the box office. In the same year, he co-starred with Jiiva and Trisha in the comedy-drama Tamil-language film Endrendrum Punnagai in a supporting role. In 2014, Vinay starred in the Tamil horror comedy film Aranmanai, which went on to become a superhit film at the box office.

In 2015, he starred in the Tamil-language romantic musical film Serndhu Polama. In 2017, he starred in a negative role in the Tamil-language crime thriller film Thupparivaalan directed by Mysskin. In the same year, Vinay played a dual role in the Tamil-language action romance film Aayirathil Iruvar. In 2019, he starred in the Tamil-language thriller film Nethraa directed by A. Venkatesh and co-starring Thaman Kumar and Subiksha. In 2021, he played the role of Terry, the antagonist, in the Tamil-language film Doctor. In 2022, he starred in a negative role in the Tamil film Etharkkum Thunindhavan directed by Pandiraj. In 2022, he again appeared in a negative role in the Tamil film Oh My Dog. In the same year, he made a cameo appearance in the Tamil-language film Connect as Joseph Benoy opposite Nayanthara. In 2023, he starred in the thriller Malayalam film Christopher as Sitaram Trimurthi. Later, he appeared in the Telugu-language film Gandeevadhari Arjuna.
