Soma Laishram was born on Sunday, 5 January 1992 (age 31 years; as of 2023) in Keishampat Dhobi Machu Leirak, Imphal, Manipur. Her zodiac sign is Capricorn. She studied at Little Flowers School and Temple of Learning School in Imphal. In 2010, she earned a bachelor’s degree in arts in English honours from G. P. Women’s College, Nandigama. Later, Soma Laishram joined CMJ University to pursue her master’s degree.

Career

Soma Laishram worked in many Manipuri teleplays, theatre shows, and dramas as a child artist. In 1999, she began hosting television programs on Doordarshan Manipur (DDK Imphal). During her teenage years, Soma worked as a newsreader on a private news channel in Manipur. She had to quit her job after her father passed away. She then began working with Neena Takhellambam, a renowned choreographer, who is Soma’s cousin. According to Soma, Neena groomed her for modelling.

In 2009, Soma participated in a beauty pageant called ‘Orange Queen’ and won the title of ‘Best Catwalk.’ She then participated in the 8th Mega Miss North East beauty pageant held in Guwahati in 2010 and won the ‘2nd Runners Up’ and ‘Best Traditional Costume’ titles.

After contesting some beauty pageants, she began working as a model. During this time, she was featured in the music video of a Manipuri song ‘Hey Girl’ alongside Mahes Thounaojam. In 2017, Soma appeared in a Meitei-Portuguese music video titled Nura Pakhang (Eu e Tu), which was directed by Romi Meitei and sung by Mangka Mayanglambam and Manuela Clã.

In 2021, Soma Laishram also appeared in the music video of the Manipuri song ‘Angaoba Malang,’ which she sang.

In 2010, Soma Laishram made her acting debut with the Manipuri film ‘Phijang Marumda in which she portrayed an MBBS student. The film also featured Manipuri actor Rajkumar Kaiku in a supporting role.

The following year, Soma appeared in the film Leima as Mona. In 2012, she portrayed a sub-inspector as Geeta in the film Ang Tamo. In the same year, Soma was cast as Thoi in the movie Hiktharaba Samji (Pizza).

In 2015, she acted as Mary in the film Hingbagee Mahao. In the same year, Soma played Memi in Nangna Nokpa Yengningi and Nungshibi in Nungshi Feijei.  In 2017, she acted as Tomba in the Manipuri film Tomthin Shija and Thoinu in the movie Enakta Leiringei. In 2019, Soma played the role of Laisna in the film Chanu IPS 2.

In 2021, Soma played the role of Thabatombi’s mother in the film Ima Machet Icha Tangkhai directed by Homeshwori. In 2022, she appeared in the films Thang Chani and Lairembi.

Politics

In September 2021, Soma Laishram joined politics and became the state unit president of its youth girls’ wing for the Republican Party of India – Athawale (RPI-A).

Controversies

Banned From Manipuri Film Industry For Three Years

In September 2023, Soma Laishram was banned from acting in films for three years by the Kangleipak Kanba Lup (KKL), a civil group in Manipur. The ban was imposed after Soma participated in a cultural event as a show stopper in New Delhi, despite requests for people to refrain from doing so due to the ongoing unrest in Manipur. On 16 September 2023, Soma Laishram spoke about the issues in Manipur and urged for peace during the final event of the North East Students’ Festival in New Delhi. • In 2022, Soma Laishram received an appreciation certificate at the Namaste Vietnam Festival for her contribution to the film industry.
