His grandfather was the popular Indian filmmaker, V. Shantaram. His mother, Charusheela Ray, was the daughter of V. Shantaram, and his first wife Vimla Shantaram.

Reportedly, his parents sent a marriage proposal to the Bollywood actress, Padmini Kolhapure in 1983, but her family rejected the proposal. He was married to the south Indian actress, Shantipriya who is the sister of the Indian actress, Bhanupriya. The couple is blessed with two daughters, Shishya Ray; who is an aspiring director, and Sonia Ray.
He debuted as a child artist in the Marathi film, ‘Chaani’ in 1977. In 1980, he appeared in the Bollywood film, ‘Thodisi Bewafaii.’ Later, he appeared in various Hindi films, like ‘Vansh’ (1992), ‘Parwane’ (1993), ‘Baazigar’ (1993), ‘Pehchaan’ (1993), and ‘Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani’ (2002). In 2004, he appeared in the film, ‘Charas: A Joint Operation,’ which proved to be his last film.
He acted in various Marathi films and was popular with the name Sushant Ray.
On 16 March 2004, he died of a massive heart attack in Mumbai.
