Sharman Joshi is an Indian film actor, theatre artist, theatre director, producer, and TV presenter who played the role of Raju Rastogi in the 2009 Hindi film ‘3 Idiots.’

Sharman Joshi was born on Saturday, 28 April 1979 (age 44 years; as of 2023) in Nagpur, Maharashtra. His ancestors hail from Patan, Gujarat. His zodiac sign is Taurus.

Parents & Siblings

His father, Arvind Joshi, was a renowned Gujarati theatre artist, playwright, and play director. His mother’s name is Usha Joshi. His sister, Manasi Joshi Roy, is an actor. Manasi is married to the Indian actor Rohit Roy.

Wife & Children

While Sharman was in college, he met Prerana, his wife, for the first time. It was love at first sight for Sharman. Initially, they became friends, and soon, they fell in love with each other. In an interview, while talking about the relationship, Sharman said,

No one proposed actually, it was just understood. It was so natural that we would materialise it into a lifetime union.”

On 15 June 2000, after dating for a long time, Sharman got married to Prerana Chopra who is the daughter of the veteran Indian actor Prem Chopra.

In October 2005, the couple was blessed with a daughter named Khyana Joshi, and in July 2009, the couple welcomed their twin sons named Vaaryan Joshi and Vihaan Joshi.

Other Relatives 

The Indian theatre artist Pravin Joshi is his father’s brother who is married to the Indian TV actress Sarita Joshi. Pravin and Sarita have two daughters Purbi Joshi, Ketki Dave (both are actors). The Indian TV actress Gulki Joshi is also Sharman’s cousin. The Indian TV actress Riddhi Dave is Pravin Joshi’s granddaughter and Sharman’s niece.

Theatre

Sharman started his career as a theatre artist and subsequently, performed in various theatre plays in different languages like Gujarati, Hindi, English, and Marathi. He has performed mainly at Thakorbhai Desai Hall, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Some of his popular theatre plays are ‘All the Best,’ ‘Ame Layi Gaya, Tame Rahi Gaya,’ and ‘Main Aur Tum.’ Apart from performing in theatre plays, he has also directed a few theatre plays. In 2016, he debuted as a theatre director in the Hindi theatre play ‘Main Aur Tum.’

In 2017, he collaborated with a UK-based company to produce an award-winning stage play ‘The Play That Goes Wrong.’ In an interview, while talking about the collaboration, Sharman said,

It just so happens that the producers of the play and I were looking for each other. They [the producers] knew of me and my plays. I am excited to bring the play to India by November end. We will have a four-month rehearsal and we intend to make it in three languages — English, Gujarati and Marathi. It’s going to be a never-seen-before act on the Indian theatre circuit. We will have actors jumping off 10ft-high platforms and flying in the air, as the play has a lot of action-based comedy.”

Film

In 1999, he debuted as an actor in the Hindi film ‘Godmother’ in which he played the role of Karsan.

He came into the limelight with the 2001 Hindi film ‘Style.’ The duo of Sharman Joshi and Sahil Khan (Indian film actor and fitness entrepreneur) gained immense popularity with the film.

Some of his other popular Hindi films are ‘Rang De Basanti’ (2006), ‘Golmaal’ (2006), ‘3 Idiots’ (2009), and ‘Mission Mangal’ (2019). His acting in these films received appreciation from the audience and critics.

Television

In 1995, he debuted in the Hindi TV show ‘Standing Boy: Maharaja Ranjit Singh.’ In 1999, he acted in the Hindi TV serial ‘Gubbare.’ He hosted the 2009 TV quiz show ‘PokerFace: Dil Sachcha Chehra Jhootha.’

Web Series

In 2019, his debut Hindi web series ‘Baarish’ was aired in which he was cast opposite the Indian TV actress Asha Negi. He played the role of Anuj Mehta in the web series.

In 2020, he appeared in another Hindi web series titled ‘Pawan & Pooja.’

Other Work

In 1996, he was selected for the all-India talent hunt contest titled ‘Star Track’ organised by ABCL (Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited). Sharman was among the top 9 boys, who got selected for the contest. He lent his voice for the song “Give Me Some Sunshine, Give Me Some Rain” along with the Indian singer Suraj Jagan for the film ‘3 Idiots’ (2009). Sharman has featured in various Hindi TV commercials such as 7UP, Nokia 5233, and Airtel.

 

On 26 August 2014, he started a film production company named ‘Sharman Joshi Productions.’

• He is very fond of Gujarati culture. During an interview, while talking about it, he said,
  

  I give a lot of credit to my Gujarati roots for the purity in my art. I feel in Gujarati culture, children are taught the importance of tehzeeb, probably a bit more than I have noticed in other cultures. Stress is given on respecting your elders and the importance of their presence in your lives. Apart from this aspect, Gujarati people are passionate about their festivals. Also, as a Gujarati, I don’t think our personality is complete without food. And my love for Gujarati cuisine is intact because of my mother’s cooking.”

  I am a ‘corrupt’ Gujarati Brahmin, one who’s eaten non-vegetarian food all his life. I have tried it all — grasshoppers, earthworms, crocodile meat. Although I don’t have any real cravings, I like indulging in Chinese or Thai food every now and then.”

• In 2018, during one of his interviews, he shared that he was thrown out of the sequel of the Hindi film ‘Golmaal Fun Unlimited’ (2006) over pay-hike issues. ^[3]Hindustan Times He said,
  

  The producers “threw me out” of the Golmaal series after negotiations to increase the remuneration did not work out. I think second part mein mere manager aur producers ki kuch negotiations mein gadbad ho gayi (in the second part, the negotiations between my manager and the producers did not work out). And I couldn’t be a part of it.”

  He continued,

  My manager was negotiating. I think some egos were ruffled and it came down to me not doing the film. Before that happened, I actually made a request that would still want to be a part of the film. I said negotiations happen…he was trying his best as a manager for me. He was trying to negotiate the best that he could. But I said, it doesn’t need to come down to this. But I guess by then it was already too late, they had to go ahead with the choice they had made which I understand and respect.”
