He is the son of BJP MLA Maadal Virupakshappa. Prashanth Madal’s father, Madal Virupakshappa, is an MLA from Channagiri in the Davanagere district of Karnataka. Virupakshappa, who was earlier serving as the chairman of the Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL) (a company that makes the popular Mysore Sandal Soap), resigned from his post on 3 March 2023 after his son was arrested by the Karnataka Lokayukta for accepting Rs 40 lakh bribe in connection with a tender process of Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited. Rendering his resignation, Virupakshappa wrote a letter to Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai in which he stated,

There is some conspiracy against my family. I’m submitting resignation under moral responsibility as there is an allegation against me.”

Career

After completing his graduation, Prashanth started working at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore. He worked there for a while and then resigned from his position. Prashanth began working for the government of Karnataka in June 2012. Soon, he started working as the deputy accounts officer of the Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited (KIRDL).

As of 2023, he is working as the chief accountant in Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). Bangalore Water Supply and Sewage Board won the international award ‘The Golden Award for Quality and Business Prestige’ in 2019 at the Quality Summit held in Rome city, Italy, which was received by Board Financial Advisor Chief Accountant Prashanth Mandal.

Prashanth is also working as the Joint Controller at KSAD Ministry of Finance, Government of Karnataka.

Controversies

Accused in Misappropriation Case

In 2017, While Prashanth was serving as the deputy accounts officer of the Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited (KIRDL), the bank faced Rs 55 crores financial irregularity. An FIR was registered at Surathkal Police Station in October against Prashanth, the then KRIDL chief finance officer Veeranagouda Patil, and the then finance superintendent Shankarachari for misappropriation of funds. According to the officials, Prashanth was responsible for choosing the banks were the deposits were to be made and norms were violated during the selection of the bank branch in Mangaluru. Apparently, on 23 August 2023, Rs. 20 crores were deposited at the Kulai Branch of Indian Overseas Bank. A week later, an additional deposit of Rs 35 crores was made to the bank. According to a senior official, “As soon as money was transferred, those involved opened a current account. A fake deposit certificate was sent to the government and the whole money disappeared within a few days.” Following the FIR, Prashanth, Patil, and Shankarachari were suspended from their positions, and the case was transferred to CBI for further investigation. ^[6]Business Standard

Accused of Corruption

In March 2023, Prashanth Madal was arrested by the Karnataka Lokayutka after he was allegedly caught taking a bribe on behalf of his father. Apparently, Prashanth had demanded a bribe of Rs. 80 lakhs from a contractor in exchange for a tender to purchase raw materials required to manufacture soap and other detergents for Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL). Meanwhile, a man submitted a complaint to the Karnataka Lokayutka alleging that Madal was taking bribes. After receiving the complaint, Lokayukta Superintendent of Police (Bengaluru) and his team set up a trap and caught Prashanth red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 40 lakh at his father’s office on Crescent Road.

During the raid, the Lokayukta recovered Rs. 1.7 crores unaccounted cash from his father’s office and around Rs. 2.2 crores were recovered from Prashanth’s office. Soon, Prashant was arrested by the Karnataka Lokayukta. Later, the Lokayukta raided Prashanth’s residence and recovered Rs. 6.10 crores of unaccounted cash from there. ^[7]CNBC
