Prashant Kumar Mishra is an Indian judge. He was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on 13 October 2021. He has also served as the Patron-in-Chief of the A. P. State Legal Services Authority. On 16 May 2023, a resolution was passed by the Supreme Court Collegium headed by CJI Dr D.Y. Chandrachud, Sanjay Kishan Kaul, K. M. Joseph, Ajay Rastogi, and Sanjiv Khanna, recommending the elevation of Prashant Kumar Mishra as a judge of the Supreme Court of India, and on 19 May 2023, he became a judge of the Supreme Court of India.

Career

Following Prashant’s enrolment as an advocate, he started practising law in the District Court at Raigarh, the High Court of Madhya Pradesh at Jabalpur and the High Court of Chhattisgarh at Bilaspur. He has appeared in a wide range of cases in diverse branches of the law ranging from civil to criminal and writ. In January 2005, he was designated as a senior advocate by the High Court of Chhattisgarh. Subsequently, he served as the Chairman of the Chhattisgarh State Bar Council for 2\BD years. He was then appointed as a member of the Rule-Making Committee of the Chhattisgarh High Court. He was also nominated for the post of Chancellor in the Executive Council of Guru Ghasidas University, Bilaspur. However, he could not secure the position. Additionally, he was also an ex-officio member of the Hidayatullah National Law University, Raipur, Chhattisgarh.

From 26 June 2004 to 31 August 2007, Prashant served as the Additional Advocate General for the State of Chhattisgarh and was later elevated as the Advocate General of Chhattisgarh. On 10 December 2009, Prashant Kumar Mishra was appointed as the judge of the High Court of Chhattisgarh. From 1 June 2021 to 11 October 2021, Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra served as the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Chhattisgarh. On 13 October 2021, he was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh (third Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh after bifurcation). He was administered the oath of office by Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan at Tummalapalli Kalakshetram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh.

On 16 May 2023, a Supreme Court Collegium comprising of CJI Dr D. Y. Chandrachud, Sanjay Kishan Kaul, K. M. Joseph, Ajay Rastogi, and Sanjiv Khanna passed a resolution in the Supreme Court, recommending the appointment of Prashant Kumar Mishra as the judge of the Supreme Court. On 19 May 2023, he took the oath as a Supreme Court judge, making him the first judge from Chhattisgarh to be elevated to a Supreme Court Judge.
