Fayyaz Hussain Shah was born in Pakistan. After completing his formal education, Shah applied for a commission into the Pakistan Army as an officer and joined the 80th Long Course of the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) in Abbottabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, where he underwent military training for two years.

Career

Fayyaz Hussain Shah was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 4th Battalion of the Sindh Regiment after completing his training module at the PMA. As he climbed up the ranks, Shah assumed numerous posts including Company Commander, Commanding Officer (CO), and Brigade Commander. In February 2018, Fayyaz Shah was promoted to the rank of major general following which he was appointed as the commandant of the National Defence University (NDU) in Islamabad, Pakistan. In April 2018, he led a team of 21 officers of the Pakistan Armed Forces studying at the NDU to Sri Lanka, where he held bilateral defence cooperation meetings with the senior echelons of the Sri Lankan Army.

Fayyaz was later posted to Balochistan, where he assumed the post of the Inspector General (IG) of the Frontier Corps (FC) (North). There, he played a monumental role in improving the trade relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan by aiding the Government of Balochistan in establishing numerous trade terminals at places affected due to insurgents. As an IG, he served till 2021.

On 11 October 2022, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general by the army following which he was sent to the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi as Inspector General (IG) (Arms). On 12 May 2023, he replaced Lt. Gen. Salman Fayyaz Ghani as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the IV Corps, also known as the Lahore Corps. As per reports, Ghani was removed from the command of the IV Corps as he went against General Asim Munir’s direct orders and did not order the Pakistan Army troops to open fire on the protestors trying to enter the Lahore cantonment.
