Dattaraj Salgaocar, the owner of the Salgaocar Group of Companies in Goa. He was born and brought up in a Saraswat Brahmin community of Saligao in North Goa. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Production Engineering from V.J.T.I, Bombay University and an MBA degree in Finance from Wharton Business School, the University of Pennsylvania after completing his school education. Power generation, hoteling, and mining are the core areas of his work. He is the owner of the ‘Salgaocar’ football club in Goa. The Smart Link Networks System is also owned by Dattaraj Salgaocar. In childhood, he was guided by Dhirubhai Ambani soon after Dattaraj’s father’s death in 1984. Both families used to live together in the same building ‘Usha Kiran’ in Mumbai. He became good friends with Mukesh Ambani and Anil Ambani in childhood. Deepti and Dattaraj started liking each other when their families used to meet each other. Later, a non-profit organisation, the Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts, was set up by Deepti Salgaocar, along with her husband, Dattaraj Salgaocar, and she was appointed as the Vice-Chairperson of the Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts.

In a conversation with a media house, Dattaraj Salgaocar stated that his marriage with Deepti was a love marriage and not the union of two big businesses. He described,
  

  Actually, it wasn’t, because we had a love marriage. I was in Mumbai to study, and lived at Usha Kiran building where the Ambanis also lived. Mukesh and I are the same age and we were good friends. So was Anil, who is two years younger than us. I met Dipti, we fell in love and told our families, who agreed immediately. It was the first wedding in her family, but the last wedding in mine, because I am the youngest of seven children.”

  Deepti in the same interview stated that after getting married to Dattaraj, she shifted to Goa and used to watch the CNN channel throughout the day. She further added that her father gifted her a fax machine through which she used to talk to him through fax messages. She stated,

  When I got married in 1983, there was nothing in Goa, and I remember cribbing to my dad about it. And he would say to just do whatever it takes to change it. At that time, we had nothing here, so he installed a huge satellite dish because we had to watch CNN. He gifted me a fax machine and he used to send me faxes every day. Even for my kids, ever since they were two years old, my father would communicate with them via fax. And those were the days when there were no fax machines in Goa at all.”
