BS Yediyurappa is a prominent Indian politician. He is the first-ever BJP member to become the Chief Minister of a South Indian state. On 26 July 2019, Yediyurappa was sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Karnataka.

BS Yediyurappa was born on Saturday, 27 February 1943 (age 76 years; as in 2019) in the Bookanakere village, Mandya District, Karnataka. His zodiac sign is Pisces. He completed his primary education from a local school of Bookanakere and his intermediate from the PES College in Mandya, Karnataka. He pursued Bachelor of Arts from Bangalore University.

After completing his college education, he started working as a first-division clerk in Karnataka Government’s social welfare department in 1965. He soon quit his job and relocated to Shikaripura, where he worked as a clerk in a rice mill, which belonged to Veerabhadra Shastri. Two years later, he got married to Shastri’s daughter. Yediyurappa, along with his wife, moved to Shivamogga, a town in Karnataka, where he opened a hardware shop.

Family, Caste, and Wife

BS Yediyurappa belongs to the Lingayat Community[1]The Indian Express. His father, Siddalingappa, was a farmer and his mother, Puttathayamma, was a homemaker. He has two brothers and two sisters. His mother died, when he was 4 years old. Yediyurappa got married to Mythra Devi in 1967. Mythra Devi passed away in 2004 after falling into a tank while drawing water from it. They have 5 children; two sons, BY Raghavendra and BY Vijyaendra, and 3 daughters, SY Umadevi, BY Arunadevi, and BY Padmavati. Yediyurappa did not remarry after his wife’s death and is a widower.

Career

BS Yediyurappa has been associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since his college days. In 1970, he was appointed as the secretary of the Shikaripura unit of the RSS. During the Emergency period, he was jailed for 45 days in Bellary and Shimoga. In 1977, he was appointed as the President of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the political outfit of the RSS. In 1980, after the Jana Sangh was renamed as the BJP, he was appointed as the President of BJP’s Shikaripura unit. In 1983, he was elected to the lower house of the Karnataka Assembly for the first time. In 1985, he was appointed as the President of the Shimoga unit in 1985. In 1988, he was appointed as the President of the Karnataka BJP.

In 1999, he lost the Karnataka Assembly elections, but, he was nominated by the BJP to the upper house of the Karnataka Assembly. In 2006, the BJP allied with the Janata Dal (Secular) and formed the government in Karnataka. It was decided that HD Kumaraswamy would be the Chief Minister for 20 months, and then Yediyurappa would be the CM for the next 20 months. When the 20 months of Kumaraswamy were over, he refused to give up the CM post. On 5 October 2007, Yeddyurappa resigned and the BJP withdrew support from the Kumaraswamy government. On 7 November 2007, the BJP and the JD(S) agreed to Yeddyurappa becoming the CM, and he was sworn in as the CM on 12 November 2007. However, the JD(S) had a disagreement with the BJP over the ministries, which resulted in Yediyurappa resigning as the CM on 19 November 2007.

In 2008, there were fresh elections in Karnataka. Yediyurappa contested from the Shikaripura constituency and won. Yediyurappa also led the BJP to its first victory in a South Indian state. On 30 May 2008, Yediyurappa took the oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka. On 31 July 2011, Yediyurappa had to resign as the Chief Minister of Karnataka; as the Karnataka Lokayukta submitted its report on illegal mining, which claimed that Yediyurappa made profits form several land deals and illegal iron ore exports. On 30 November 2012, he submitted his resignation as an MLA and also as a member of the BJP, and he launched his party, the “Karnataka Janata Paksha” on 9 December 2012.

Yediyurappa won as an MLA from the Shikaripura constituency, but his party was not doing well in Karnataka. On November 2013, he announced that he’ll be re-joining the BJP, and on 2 January 2014, he merged his party with the BJP. In 2016, Yediyurappa was appointed as the President of the Karnataka BJP. The BJP announced that Yediyurappa will be the Chief Ministerial candidate for the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections. The BJP won 104 seats (8 short of the majority). He was sworn in as the Chief Minister on 17 May 2018, and he was given 15 days to prove his majority in the house. However, the Supreme Court of India intervened and ordered a trust vote within two days. Yediyurappa failed to prove his majority, and hence, had to resign on 19 May 2018. It made him the shortest-serving CM in the history of India; as he was the CM for just 2 days.

In July 2019, 16 MLA’s of the JDS-Congress Government submitted their resignation. It caused the government to lose the majority in the Karnataka Assembly. On 23 July 2019, a floor test was ordered, and after HD Kumaraswamy failed to win the floor test, the government had to step down. Yediyurappa was invited by the Karnataka Governor, Vajubhai Vala, to form the government, and on 26 July 2019, Yediyurappa took oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka.

Controversies

  • In 2004, there were several rumours that Yediyurappa was having an affair with Shobha Karandlaje; a Lok Sabha MP from Karnataka. Although, both of them denied the affair. There were also rumours that Yeddyurappa and Shobha got married to each other in a secret ceremony.

  • In 2009, the District Magistrate of Karnataka ordered a probe into the death of Yediyurappa’s wife. His wife had fallen into a water tank and drowned. Several people claimed that her wife’s death was a conspiracy as the circumstances were very suspicious. Reportedly, his wife’s height was 5′ 5″, and the water tank that she fell into only had 4 feet of water in it.

  • In 2011, Yediyurappa was forced to resign from the post of the Chief Minister of Karnataka by the BJP. He was accused by the Karnataka Lokayukta of corruption. Yediyurappa resigned, and he was jailed on 15 October 2011.
  • In April 2016, he was criticized when Karnataka sugar baron, Murugesh Nirani, gifted him a Mercedes SUV worth 1 Crore INR. Yeddyurappa travelled in the SUV to the drought-affected areas of Karnata. The opposition criticized him for accepting gifts and travelling in luxury vehicles while the people of Karnataka were suffering.
  • In May 2017, Yediyurappa, along with other leaders, had visited the home of a Dalit man for breakfast. The man had cooked pulao for the leaders. Reportedly, Yediyurappa did not eat the food prepared by the Dalit man, but, he ordered food from a nearby hotel. Several leaders criticized him for this move, stating that the BJP does not consider Dalits as their equal.

  • In February 2019, several audiotapes with conversations of Yediyurappa and other MLA’s of Karnataka came to light. The audiotapes revealed that many MLA’s were to be given a sum of 50 Crores INR to resign from their parties and join the BJP. The JD(S) claimed that it was an attempt by Yediyurappa to dismiss the HD Kumaraswamy government.

  • In March 2024, Sadashivanagara police in Bengaluru filed a case against Yediyurappa under the POCSO Act for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl when she and her mother visited him on 2 February 2024 to seek help in a cheating case.
