Death

Vedika died on 26 June 2023 in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh after being shot dead by Priyansh. ^[2]Bhaskar

Vedika’s murder case

On 16 June 2023, Vedika sustained severe injuries after being shot by Priyansh Vishwakarma in his office at Dhanvantari Nagar. Instead of immediately seeking medical help, Priyansh drove around with Vedika in his car for approximately four hours. Eventually, he took her to Smart City Hospital but later fled from the hospital with the gun used in the shooting and the CCTV footage from his office. Subsequently, Priyansh reached out to Vedika’s brother to notify him about the incident. On 18 June 2023, a video emerged of Vedika receiving medical care at the hospital. In the footage, she was heard affirming that Priyansh was the one who shot her.

On 19 June 2023, Priyansh was apprehended by the police in the Narsinghpur district. Following his arrest, he admitted to shooting Vedika. He arrived at the Dhanwantri Nagar police station in a black Scorpio vehicle adorned with BJP flags. Initially, the police did not file a case within 24 hours, but after Vedika’s relatives raised concerns about the police’s inaction, a case was eventually registered against Priyansh at the Sanjeevani Nagar police station. The charges filed against him include IPC section 308 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and sections 25 and 26 of the Arms Act.

According to Ashok Thakur, Vedika’s uncle, initially, there was some improvement in her condition. Unfortunately, her health worsened due to the bullet remaining in her back, causing an infection throughout her body. She underwent surgery on her stomach, but her condition continued to deteriorate. As a result, she was placed on a ventilator on 24 June 2023. Her organs began to fail, and on 26 June 2023, at approximately 11:30 am, the doctors announced her deceased. The doctors explained that Vedika’s organs were gradually failing, and even after a week had passed since the incident, it was not possible to remove the bullet from her spinal cord.

After Vedika’s tragic death, the police escalated the charges against Priyansh to murder. They also sent the bullet recovered from Vedika’s body to the Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis and investigation.

In response to the incident, the BJP issued an official statement denying any association or affiliation of Priyansh with their party. BJP Jabalpur president Prabhat Sahu issued a press release and stated,

Priyansh Vishwakarma, a resident of Ganganagar, a suspect in the recent firing, does not hold any position in the Bharatiya Janata Party.”
